alternator fault?

When the alternator went on my 4Runner, light on the dash came on. My 2000 Corolla alternator appears to be dying, as its the radio goes out when the high beams are turned on or the car is started, but there is no light. Before I pull the alternator in the snow, anything I'm not considering? Used to wrench a tonne on my 4Runner, but life happened and I now drive a Corolla and don't wrench or wheel it lol.

Ideas? Why isn't my charging light going on while the battery appears not to charge. It should be instant as evidenced when I would take my trucks through deep water and the belt would slip on the alt. pulley- instant dash light.
