Acceleration issue

I've got an '88 4Runner with a 22RE, and I've got a strange issue going on when I'm accelerating. I've got the pedal down typically trying to pick up speed, and then all of the sudden it lunges forward with a bunch of extra power. Enough that it rocks my head back a bit if I'm not expecting it. I don't have a tach, but I'd guess around 3,500 rpms. I've replaced and adjusted my TPS, same thing. Given it a tune up, cleaned the throttle body. While it's running a lot better now, it just seems that I'm missing out on a lot of power that I should have in the lower RPM range. I want it to pull like it does at high rpms. It's a very sudden transition, regular power to going like a scalded dog.

Any ideas?

My 3.0 does the same thing. You push the gas a little more and nothing happens so you push a little more and eventually something works and it shoots forward. Try seafoam, mine got a little better after running it through.

When you cleaned the throttle body did you remove it to clean it ?, did you also check the cacuum ports on it to make sure there not plugged ?. When you did the tune up did you replace the fuel filter ?, if not it would be a good idea. Also check the 02 sensor, or if its real old with a lot of miles on it, then just replace it. If you do replace it use a Denso 02 sensor, do not use a Bosch 02 sensor, they don`t work well in toyotas engines.

Yep, took the TB off the truck to clean it and replace the TPS. Made sure all the vacuum ports were clean. Replaced the fuel filter a little while after the tune-up because that was my next guess. Haven't checked the O2 sensor, will give that a shot. Thanks!

No, I never did solve it. It still does it, although not as bad as it used to.

Never got the chance to swap out the O2 sensor though.

okay thanks. i actually did solve my issue this weekend and it turned out to be the spark plug wires. This is now the second set of Toyota wires I've had gone bad on me.. ..I'm starting to think they are not that great and you can buy 3 sets of after market wires for the price of a single Toyota set.
