Auto...Driving in LA traffic with a stick is just askin to kill yourself. I sat in one spot with my foot halfway on the clutch for an hour solid before...in out in out in out...Now I just glide along with a nice cold water and watch other people suffer.
Sportscar...definitely stick.

I have a standard transmission here. I had a previous expensive experience destroying a automatic from muddy water pouring down the dipstick because the transmission internal pressure pushed out the dipstick and I didn't know before I went through a deep water crossing. I'll take a stick over a auto anyday. Only drawbacks are auto's are better for crawling they have a better low range however you will sometimes have torque converter slip which isn't fun either on a steep hill.
Standards are way more reliable for offroad I would rather pay $200 for a clutch because it burned out than a $1500-3000 automatic transmission overhaul because you got the clutch packs wet or fryed a solinoid because it overheated.

Got one of the last 5 speed 4Runners sold in the US (new that is). It took a while to find. Couldn't find one with the 5 speed and the e-locker so I chose the 5 speed. I figured installing a locker is a lot easier than doing a 5 speed conversion.

Hey guys, I need some help.
I'm looking at a 2000 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4WD with 41K miles for $18,898
It's got what I want - black, 4x4, grey int, sunroof - but it is a 5spd manual.
Should I get it or look for a auto? I was looking at getting a 2004, but this one is nice and could save me some serious $$. They say it is rated to tow 2500lbs? Does it need a hitch to tow more or is that it?

I have a 5 speed on my 94 p/u, but its more of a 4 speed with the larger tires and stock gears. hopefully i'll get the gears swapped this fall or winter.

And your 2000 4Runner has better power. You'll probably also get better gas mileage day to day with the manual. It sounds almost like what I want...but not black. Too hot in the desert.

The new 4Runner with 5000lbs sounds better, I should probably wait and get that. I just go so tempted to buy now!!

Sometimes i miss driving stick. But for everyday driving im glad i have auto. I read in someones post on how toyota doesnt let you get what you want or its expensive if you want it. I don't like that also. Like my prerunner, no choice.

My wife and I went Toyota shopping on Sunday and test drove a 4wd Extended Cab Pickup. I spun the wheels getting out of the parking lot accidently. That didn't happen on the 4wd Crew Cab or the FWD Highlander. Manual trannies give you a positive lockup and have little power loss.
I just wish Toyota would take that 4wd Crew Cab, enclose like they did in '84, offer a manual tranny and call it a 4RUNNER!

I've had an '90 4Runner with an automatic and now I have an '89 2WD Pickup with a manual. I didn't like the automatic in the 'Runner. It didn't have any smoke and took forever to get up to 60. My 2WD is awesome when it comes to engine performance. If it were a 4x4 I would never sell it, but right now I'm saving up and looking for either a Tacoma(manual) or a Tundra(automatic).
