I want to add A/C to my 86. What is the latest year that will swap into with minor if any modifications. I know the 86 would have had R12 and newer ones with R134. Will a 95 have the R134 or still use R12? I want to use one that is already using R134 system to avoid conversion, what year might be a direct swap??? Thanks.

 

tag cause my ac compressor took a and i need ac in this town.

 

alll the conversion is is a fitting on the high and lowside port and some orings. i have used just the lowside fitting and added 134 to a 12 system and worked just fine. i got a corolla that had 12 i had to replace the oring cause it had leaked all the 12 out. i put some new green orings in it and freon134 and it is very cold

 

is there a source that I can find the fittings? is this something that someone can do on their own, or is it a take it to the shop thing?

 

the fittings are at oreillys by all the freon. they just screw over you existing fittings

I just gotta figure out why my compressor wont turn on when i hit the switch.

 

if its low on freon it wont come on its a saftey switch, just run the truck with the A/C on and add freon when it gets enough it will come on, then just add till your pressure is ok

also, have you ever heard of hotshot freon?

I guess it is supposed to be able to refill a r12 system with no conversions needed and it will work fine.

the proper name is r414b. I saw some stuff about it whie searching for conversion sources.

I thinkj i just read you need an EPA licenst for hotshot, but I dont think that is corrects. whatever. I'l just get whatever autozone has.

I'm in bakersfield. It been 100+ for quite a few days this year. but its not usally too humid. but its still effin hot.

 

thats what i found u still need a liscence to buy it. its hard to beat 134 6-8 bucks a can

well, i went to autozone, picted up a r12 to 134a kit, it came with new oil, I had read that it was no good to mix old oil and new freon, so i get home and i'm lookin at my compressor, and at the fittings, i only have one fitting that the new fitting will thread onto, so i put it there....
stupid...

turns out... someone had already done the retrofit... now i have 2 fill fittings, where it should be only one.. side note the lower service port is always on the larger diameter tube off the compressor. also, make sure the one you are putting on is the large diameter tube and not the larger foam insulation..

oh well.. I put in the oil/freon can and the compressor kicks on, i then put 2 more 12 oz cans in, and go feel the air.. it blowing out cool air, not cold, but its a damn sight better than the hot air it was before..

at idle it blows cool air, and at higher rpms it colder.
I couldnt find anywhere that said how much r12 to use, but whatever that number is you only use 80-90% for 134a...

all in all I am satisfied, i'll be dumping another can or so in tomorrow see how that works out...

yeah, your not supposed to mix them but i have and it woeked fine for years.I havew buddys that have done the same and there have never been any issues, the systems have always atleast been empty tho. sounds like someone may have swapped it out already anyway. get one of the cheap guages so you will know what you got on the lowside with it running on high. The last one i swapped over is in my 91 corolla with 264k miles. it gets so cold you need a jacket even at idle. if you have an electric fan be sure it is coming on also. just dont overfill it that can cause more issues also.
