Vague Steering, too much play

Any suggestions on why the steering on an 02 4runner is so vague, and loose? I mean it is actually tight when you turn, but there's way too much play in the steering wheel. The dealer service says all the bushings and joints are ok, but it sure doesn't feel right.... Everything is stock on this truck. THanks!

Well, my other car is a 2012 BMW 535i... but I'm actually comparing it with a friends 01 4Runner SR5. I was so impressed with my friend's ride and quality, i bought my sister's 02 limited and decided it was a great car to put some money into and keep forever. Maybe new brakes will make a significant difference in drive quality? They're in pretty bad shape...

How many miles on the 4runner? You will notice a larger Dead spot from the wheel being centered to when the car starts turning compared to your BMW. Check the manual. it should tell you what the normal amount of play is when the wheel is centered. I think my t100 has about 1.5" normally. Also sometimes dealers have morons working there.. try another shop if you still think something is screwy

There's 182,000 miles on it... Could there be a power steering fluid issue you think?

Likely some worn steering or suspension components. Are the tires properly inflated?
