So ive just found a used elocker on line and am in the process of getting it shipped so i can attempt to retro fit the front axle housing on my 86 sas truck. The guy is asking 400 bucks for the 3rd with actuator. Ive been looking at inchworm for harnesses and wiring so thats all good and im comfortable with the housing mods i need to do, just wondering if you guys out there think this is a good deal and worth the risk.. I will be swapping out the ring and pinoin as well and will change all bearings with the inchworm elocker install kit... thanks

 

400 is a decent deal. I've seen them for 800

 

It'll be a deal. Especially if you do the setup yourself......unless you screw that up....

 

i have an extra axle housing so i get 2 chances on the mods altho i have all the right tools and have done my home work so with a little luck it should work out. I will prob get my ring and pinion set up by a local specialist.. All in all i should be into it for half the price of a new unit... Providing the elocker i buy is good.. Stoked that people think this is a good deal, sometimes you gotta take a chance , especially if money is tight...

 

Just use the gasket they offer to drill the extra holes. JUST REMEMBER TO LAY DOWN THE GASKET ON THE HOUSING THE RIGHT WAY!!!!! Or you will miss drill the holes. Easy peezy. I've done three. You will probably have to clearance a few of the holes on the diff. So make sure you have a good rat tail file.

 

yeah dont want to make any school boy errors!!! I will order the gasket from inchworm when i order the harness and elocker bearing/install kit.. Im looking forward to doing it.. One thing i do have is time... there are some really good threads and write ups on doing the housing mods..

 

IMO, its harder to figure out the wiring than doing the fab work for the diff, lol!

thanks, yeah i will probably bite the bullet and get the wiring harness and the switch pack from inchworm as im ok with cutting and drilling but a bit of a moron when it comes to electrical stuff...

Out of 5 friends that used to have elockers, not a one still does. They have all gone ARBs and spools.
IMO it ruins pefectly good housing and limits you on swapping diffs.

for $400 vs the price of an arb/compressor etc I would give an elocker a shot...I loved the one that was in my old '05 Tacoma

 

wabbit, for the price i think its worth the risk.. As i said i do have a spare housing (provided i dont mess up the mod) Im thinking it should perform as good as an arb or zip and as i live in the rockies and drive on icy roads a spool in the front isnt an option.. what was the reason your 5 friends got rid of their elockers??

 

Trail spare is expensive as opposed to just any 8" diff on a normal housing.
Motors failing.
Electrical worries.
ARBs I had setup in 94 just had to get some maintenance.
Just not an elocker fan myself. Other more reliable options that don't require butchering your axle housing.

I sold the front diff and elocker I had for $650.

good, valid points... Fingers crossed it works out for me...

 

It's not much of a butchering. It's even easier to install if the housing is a V6 one.

 

Butchered = modified so you can only use an elocker for eternity
