I'm at a crossroads. My shocks are pretty well shot. I've got 265K on a '96 4Runner. I've committed to keeping it up and rebuilding/replacing the engine when it's finally time. So far, I've got a warped cylinder head leaking exhaust into the coolant. Not pretty, but still runs great at 18-20 mpg. Time to look at the suspension, which is all stock and on the second set of shocks...ever.

I don't want Monroes or Gabriels. I like the thought of going with Tokicos and can get a set for $250 or so. I'm now also looking at the sonoransteel basic System 3 suspension sets. I don't need a lift or any particular ride quality, but am wondering what other benefits come from the new coils. I've got some booty sag like all respectable 4Runners. I like the idea of a mild build-up as I slowly rebuild this entire thing over the next 5 years.

I'm going to have to pay labor on the shocks and any other suspension work. Here's the question?

1. What are other benefits of new coils along with the shocks?
2. What is the labor implication of new coils with the new shocks?
3. It is worth doing for an extra $500 or should I stick with my current coils?

sorry, im not much help on this issue, i could just see this post going they way you didnt want it to in a hurry. but in my opinion, if you have already planned on keeping it for a while and rebuilding the engine, you may want to consider new coils.
