I just got done replacing the engine in my 96 t100 4x4 extracab, 5vz-fe engine, donor came from an 01 4runner,
the motor is bolted in with all the fluids and runs very well but the first 2-3 minutes it ran, it was very loud and grinding I couldn't find where is was coming from at the time but I believe it was my torque converter. but went away fairly quick and I told myself it was my loose power steering belt. So yesterday I start it up again and try and take it for a test drive, nothing, nothing at all. I put it in reverse and the rpms change and drop a little bit like normal but nothing happens it wont move. So I try d, 2, 1 , r, again and nothing happens at all.
I go and check the fluid looks a little dirty and slighty high and cold, transmission is cold to the touch as well, the truck is still running this whole time though.
so I put it in drive again and stick my foot out and roll the truck backwards an inch or two.
Ive never done a Toyota motor replacement before and haven't messed with auto trannys that much, so when I was installing my new motor I bolted the converter to the flexplate before installing the motor and barely put any atf in, I know I messed that up, but did I just ruin my transmission and torque converter or did I forgot something small??
I really need my truck back as me and my wife and 2 kids need to move in the next month or 2 and 1, need a pickup truck, 2 don't have time to pull the motor again, or tranny really 3, I need a ride to work
if anybody has some suggestion that would be great
Pretty sure I stripped the splines on the torque converter or the input shaft on the tranny, hopefully just the torque converter. I got the driveshafts pulled and 3rd crossmember pulled. Should be able to pull the t case tomorrow and then I’m gonna have to fab up a plate to caddie my transmission as I only have normal floor jacks on hand.
I feel so dumb ha. I spend so much time getting that new motor in to just screw up something else, if everything is fubar I’m prolly going to look into manual swaps. I like lining up clutch discs more than torque converters apparently.
New torque converter installed and transmission reinstalled and nothing no drive what so ever.
So I pull the transmission again, and got a used junkyard one from a 97 4Runner. In the middle of figuring out what I need to swap.
So far; oil pan, shift lever, bell housing, and tail shaft housing.
When I pulled the tail shaft housing i found my 96 t100 uses a different speed sensor than the 97 4Runner and different length output shaft. Damn. No luck lately.
I got everything but the last snap ring to pull the output shaft on my old transmission I couldn’t see any real signs of damage but I found lots of grey oil and flakes on the magnet on the oil pan.
New to me transmission reassembled and reinstalled everything else bolted up and ready to go. I started to put fluid in and it started pouring right back out through the pan to trans flange, drained it back into the bottles and started to pull the pan off but it got dark. Picking up a new gasket today from Napa, I only used rtv when assembling it.
So I got the oil pan resealed and it held up good. And the truck moves again. I haven’t got to really drive it though, I broke a sway bar end link and haven’t gotten time really.
And the transfer case bolt pattern won’t match up with the 95+ transfer case so you have to swap the tail shaft housing.
I'm relatively certain the outer splines engage the pump.
I don't think we have any resident AT guys that can explain any of this. (There are exploded/cut-away views in your manual) actually there are whole Toyota books devoted to the a340, mine us not accessible.
You pretty much never want to mate an engine to an auto trans with the TC bolted up.
Thanks for the replys, I will never again bolt the tc to the flywheel before seating it fully into the transmission. I learned that the very hard way ha.
But now I’m having some issues, I went to test drive it this morning and reverse cut out on me.
Now I had to adjust my linkage to get it to display park on the dash when it was in park. The lever would go into park and the brake would catch but the indicator was dark, it showed good in all other gears. So I adjusted the nut by the brake master until the indicator showed it was in park. But to get it to read in neutral, would had to jiggle it some.
I warmed the truck up for about 3-5 minutes, the weather was a little colder than normal this morning. I put it in reverse and it started moving easy didn’t need any gas really but I got to the end of my driveway and stopped for a car driving by. When I hit the gas to back out the rest of the way nothing happened. My back wheels were in the gutter of the curb and my front wheels weren’t on the incline of the sidewalk yet so it would take a little force to get it out of that position. I put it in park and back to reverse and still nothing.
I put it in drive and it went back up in the driveway, but still nothing in reverse. And I couldn’t get it to roll neutral either.
I just remembered that I never put a vacuum line between the t case and transmission, mine ripped, but that’s only for 4wd engagement right?
did I take the adjust up to much were it stays in park when I put it in reverse?
