Tire width/stock wheels question

I have a 2000 SR5 with the alloy 16" wheels and am running 265/75/16s on it right now. When searching around I found some people that think you can run 285's without rubbing and some that you can't. Has anyone done this for sure and knows? Also, getting 285's means wider so would I have to get new wheels? I'm basically sort of interested in getting the largest/widest tires I can without getting new wheels. Any tips would be great. Thanks!

please do not quote me on this...BUT!

i am going to be getting 285/75/16 trXus mt's, which measure out to 33x11.5"

i am buying new black steel wheels with 3.75" backspacing to avoid any rubbing issues.

from what i have been able to figure out...a 10.5" 33 will be okay, but i believe those are only really offered for the 15" wheels.

I have a 3" lift with 265/75/16s on 16x8 procomps, with a 4 inch backspacing, and I have had rubbing on the lower valance, but I have the beefy fender flares. Hope this helps, I didnt have the rubbing until I spaced them out, and then It was just the corner of th flare that needed trimming. I know this isnt a direct answer, but when you widen the stance you will eliminate rubbing on the control arms, but you have to take a look on your front bumper as well.

I can do some trimming on the fender flares or bumper as necessary I just don't want any serious rubbing. Would 285s mean I need to buy new actual wheels to fit them? I'm not sure what this backspacing thing means. Thanks!

The less backspacing, the more the wheel sticks out. I was told that 265/75/16s were the biggest tires I could go with my lift, but I thinks thats BS. The tires you were looking at were basically 32.8: tall while mine are only 31.6", the extra tread width isnt much. I think you should be safe if you go with a 4" backspacing on 16x8s, mine have plenty of room left before the control arm. You will definately have to trim the valence and bumper with those though, I had to with mine. I would honestly reccomend the 265/75s though. They will fit with very minimal trimming, and a 285/75 isnt that much bigger. I had a 3" lift, and I think the 265/75s look right on and very proportional. Unless they dont make the trie your looking at in a 265/75, I would say the 285s should fit fine, but really wont be noticiably different than 265s

Again, from what I've read, these 285's on the stock 16" wheels will rub the upper control arms.
