tire location top or bottom ?

have been considering get some lugage racks from the junk yard to put on my topper then im going to install some fog two for the front two for the rear nothing insane

but heres my question i see alot of baskets that will fit on the top of trucks that you can put spare tires in should i put the tire up thier or will it create to much weight for the topper and make the truck two top heavy my other concern with the topper spare tire carrier is drag fuel economy is bad as it is

or will the stock under bed one hold a 33 tire ive measured it and it looks like they will hold a it but is that little chain going to be strong enough to hold a over sized tire up or should i see if i cant get something of a silverado from the junkyard to hold one up

my dream would be one that came off the bumper but that's not gonna happen till i can save it up still wana get some stuff for the jetta first and i would put in the bed but got my sleeping platform back their well looking forward to anyone's ideas good or bad

topper is a A.R.E and strong and fairly thick to

I used to have my spare 33in on top of my 81' truck. It was a real pain in the back when I took it down. I really didn't find it to be that top heavy but then again, it didn't see hwy millage very often and, when I was 4wheeling, I wasn't going fast or doing any of that rock climbing, just mud and swamps.

I wouldnt put it on top. I dunno about your tires but my 33" toyos weigh 70lbs without the wheel - definitely would be a chore to get one up top of the cab. Stick it underneath or in the bed for now, then get tire carrier when you can afford it...or get good excuse to buy welder to make one

Personally, I plan on making an in-bed tire carrier that positions the tire vertically on the side of the bed. Not a very common thing. People seem to loke those prerunner style tire mounts which consume all the bed space. Found a pic on google of a homemade vertical carrier which consisted of a simple design that will even accommodate different sized tires: first piece of steel was a horizontally positioned piece of all-thread/threaded rod with a lug nut and was about a foot-long. On the non-lugnut end they made a loop/eye that a 2nd piece of steel passed through vertically. This 2nd piece of steel was anchored at the bottom to the bed floor and the top anchored to the bedrail. Basically, the horizontal can move up or down depending on tire diameter, just pass the rod through a lug hole, toss on a washer and nut or lugnut on there and make tire snug against the side of the bed. Problem solved. Put keyed lugnut on there as theft deterrent or a cable lock.

I had my spare 33 on top for a while. Was nice to have the bed space. Went in to the city and had to take it off to get into a parking garage. Then the cap came off shortly after.

So basically, it really doesn't matter. Just put it where you have space. If you don't like it, move it.

I wanted to use the stock carrier under the truck, but maintain as much ground clearance as practical. I put a 33 X 9.5 under the truck in the stock carrier, you just have to make sure you will clear the exhaust pipe in the process.

It's hard to say for me. I don't like putting tires on the roof, mostly because when you're crawling it tends to make things a little tippier (mnd my 4runner already tips a good bit) and you will hit every low-hanging tree branch out there. The other side is that I can't fit anything larger than a 31" tire under my rig, and even that cuts it REALLY close. Just gotta find what works.

I've got a 285/75/16 on top of my 4runner in a Wilderness rack. No real issues with it being top heavy but then I only do some mall crawling on the weekends looking for chicks. (kidding)

I went that route since the tire would not fit in the stock location and I needed all the cargo space I could get for camping gear. Since I don't plan on getting flats very often I'm not too concerned with getting it down.
