timing belt or chain????

i have a 2004 4Runner Sport edition and i was wondering if i have a timing belt or a timing chain. i've been to two mechanics and got two different answers. it's confusing and also very scary at the same time. my miles are getting up there and if i have a belt, i need to get it changed.

is there a way to check on my own without taking apart my rig?

help me out!

2.7L i4 (3RZ-FE) has a chain, 3.4L v6 (5VZ-FE) has a timing belt.

oh wait.... '03+ had either the 4.0L v6 (1GR-FE) or the 4.7L v8 (2UZ-FE) ....still you have timing belt.

OHC "V" configuration engines don't typically have timing chains.

Pretty sure your mechanic is fine, the 4.0 V6 found in 4th gens 4Runners, new Tacomas and FJ Cruisers does in fact utilize a Timing Chain and not a belt. The I-force 4.7 V8 on the other hand uses a Timing Belt.
