Red face Timing belt ?

I was told that if the timing belt broke on my truck (01 Tocoma v6 auto)that it would cause damage like the pistons hitting something and so on ,is that true? Some folks say that it only hurts the 4 cylinders but the v6s won't suffer any damage .

If the timing belt broke on any engine, I would say its screwed. The timing would be off, and it probably wouldn't run. at least not very well. Either way, if it damages components or not, if a timing belt breaks, GET IT FIXED!

Why do you ask?

3.0 and 3.4 toyota motors are NON interference which means ... that the pistons and valves dont hit each other. so if atiming belt on one of these engines broke, you would replace the timing belt ( and anything it happen to break) and you would be fine. obvioulsy you would have to put the cams and crank back to tdc and soem other things but the motor should be fine

That's what I heard about the v6 engines, non interference,to me that means if the belt breaks the engine stops but nothing is banged up. thanks swaycleveland.

yes. the 3.4 is a non interference engine. i have broken my timing belt a while back at 3500 rpm. nothing bad happened to the engine. just took the front end off, replaced the belt, made sure all the timing lines lined up. put it back together. and i was on my way.

Knowing that it will not permanently damage your engine is a nice thing. However, it will leave you stranded. When I did mine in my 3.0 it was not a ten minute job. I'll admit, I was learning as I went, but it took me several days. If I'd had help, I think it would have taken a solid weekend. This is not a job you want to do on the side of the road.
