Thoughts on this ring and pinion pattern?

I'm setting up my first ring and pinion and after looking at countless images of correct patterns online I think I'm about there. Details: E-locker 3rd, Nitro 4.56's gears, stock .075 pinion shim, about .007 backlash.

I tried a .072 shim and got this pattern. My gut tells me it's not enough but my head says it's better. .0075 backlash.

Not a pro, you have to @ZUK and see if he will pop in.

Much like lots of other situations you want to try changing one thing at a time. I like the first one better than the second one. The first picture captured a good shot of both contact points and they overlapped pretty well. You moved the pinion farther out this made the wear patterns separate from the center more. Then you moved the ring out (?) Which added a little more spread and the contact shallower.

Hi Zen-
The first 2 (075) are just a tad deeper than even I like to see as indicated by the DRIVE pattern.

072 moved it just a tad to the shallow side as indicated by the DRIVE Your magic number is between the 2 shims......between 073 and 074 is ideal. That is definitely splitting hairs for sure.🍺

👍👍👍👍

Thanks for chiming in ZUK! Your posts have been very helpful in getting this project where it is! I dug through my shims and managed to stack 3 that add up to .0740/.0735. I think it looks better, but I'm concerned that the coast side pattern has moved up quite a bit on the heel. Backlash is around .008 (sorry if the angle keeps changing I'm fighting the setting sun blasting through my windows)

Looks great. It's common for the coast to favor the outside a little......it just is what it is.👌

Many thanks! Now hopefully it doesn't all go out the window when I take off the "setup bearings" and press on the new ones.
