You can drive in low on the roads just don't be locked in and do it...big difference between 4Hi and 2wd Low and 4wd Lo.

 

you should be fine just go slow and watch your oncomming stops.I have pulled alot of stuff with my 92 22re,from round bales of hay to other tacos and all kinds of other things just take it slow and watch riding those brakes.I usually use 4lo no hubs locked.youll be fine

I don't know what the tow rating on the truck is (I'm sure everyone else does), but it seems like the miata probably weighs less? I would think 2lo would be unnecessary unless he was pulling exceptionally steep grades or something.

I towed a 92 honda all over with my blue truck. Just took er easy and didn't have a single problem

 

Main thing to remember is that; yes you can go but you really have to watch how "attempt" to stop.

 

u know one thought if your towing the car with out a tow dolly or a towing device u have to have someone else in the car that knows what theyre doing to watch u and keep the tow rope or chain tight but not bog your truck down and also on stops not rear end u or jerk you back.

honestly i wouldlnt do it id find a fullsize truck n a dolly or have someone else do it. too many factors that can cause issues. PLUS in some states like here in oregon u can no longer tow a car behind a truck or vehicle such as what ur explaining with out a towing aid such as a dolly.

I've been in the vehicle being towed like that a few times. Mostly back roads and I'll tell ya it's interesting...

I've heard of ppl running the chain down a pipe so it can't roll into the tow vehicle...

But there's a lot of things I'd do before I'd get that far...

 

I have been pulled around town with a tow strap. It works alright, you just have to be careful, and let the vehicle being towed do most of the braking when you come to a stop. It's not as safe as a tow dolly, but when you can't afford to rent one because you don't have even that much extra money, it works. No it's not a hillbilly stunt, I live right outside of Austin, TX. to the OP... don't let your buddy drive your truck. you drive it, make him to the work in the Miata. just take the corners a little wider, and drive no faster that 30 MPH, and turn your hazards on.

No lie! My buddy once towed my lifted 87 Silverado 3/4 ton 12 miles with his Nissan 300ZX and a tow rope! His car burned out for like 5 seconds before my truck would start moving and I think his tranny smelled funny afterwards but it worked, lol, it was fun being 16!
