T-case making noise

Had a local shop use Chassis ears to locate the noise to my t-case, sounds like rocks grinding up when I go through 1st and second gears. Rolling along in 2nd gear, say 1500 rpm, slowly accelerating really brings out the noise. I assume this is chain noise? If so, anyone know the process for changing that out or should I just replace the whole t-case. Any help would be greatly appreciated, lost job 20 months ago and I am on a REALLY thin budget.

It might help to know what vehicle.

Please check which section you post in as you originally had this in the classifieds.

Need some vehicle information... 6cylinder toys have a chain driven case and 4 cylinders have a gear driven case. There are a WHOLE LOTTA moving parts inside a T-case including a bunch of bearings. It's pretty impossible to diagnose a noise like that without tearing the case down and looking inside. If you do have a chain driven case they are easy to find for cheap because wheelers swap them out for gear driven cases. I GAVE the stock one away out of my 4-Runner when I went to Marlin Dual cases and it worked just fine when I took it out. Be careful driving your rig with a noise like that. Your sitting on a time bomb for the case to grenade itself.

Thanks for the reply. When you say you can find cases for cheap, how much are we talking about? Also, how difficult are they to swap out?

Easy to swap...might be a little harder finding one for your Taco.. have you tried the local junkyard yet?

Not yet, pretty sure it is gonna be tough though. So you think swapping won't be a big issue?
