Rough running 91' pickup.

Hey yall!
Pretty new to asking on forums but im running out of ideas and i need some new thoughts
I'm working on an old farm toyota, 91' with the 6 cyl. It runs absolutely mint 90% of the time, but sometimes it gets a massive hiccup, then throws an engine code, and smells like it's running rich as crap. We've already done some work on the truck, such as replacing a bad o2 sensor, replacing the cat, and some other small things.
My first thought was injector problems, or maybe the relay, but I'd love any input yall can give!

Also small note I forgot! It'll have the code and smell for usually about 30 seconds, then everything clears up and it runs like a champ again for a while

I have no idea 😬 there no obd2 and I've never really worked on a vehicle before 96 so I'm not sure what I would do to check that code

There's a test connector on the engine. It's a rectangular, plastic box, say 2X4 inches, although I may be WAY wrong on that guesstimate. But you get the idea. Open the cover, and it will have connector pins looking up at you. The cover should have a "map" of what each pin is. I think it's located on the spark plug wire holders on the driver's side, but it might be located on the engine compartment fuse block. The one right near the battery. Essentially, it's obd I . You put a jumper between T1 and TE1, or it might be T1 and E1, IIRC. A paperclip works just fine as a jumper, or make a jumper wire, with male connector pins at both ends.

Then, turn the key to ON, but don't start it. The position it would be in when the engine is running, if you were to start it. The CE light will flash in a certain pattern. Like for example 2 flashes, and then 5 flashes, then back to two flashes, then 5 flashes. That's code 25. Then you can check the book to see what code 25 is. If it flashes more than one code, then there are more than one code to check. Like it flashes the 2, then 5, then 3 then 4, that's 25, AND 34.

A hint: It's a good idea to pull the negative lead off the battery for a minute or so. That will clear any stored codes the computer might have. That way, you're not chasing old, no longer valid codes. Then wait until it has the trouble happens again, then check what code(s) are displayed.

I THINK I have a FSM for that year. If you need, I can post the pages with the location of the test connector, and what the codes mean. IF you need me to.

Does that help at all?
Pat☺

There, the complete how-to, including the meaning of the codes.
