91 toyota pickup want rund righ need help please!

Hello everyone I'm new to the forum and I hope this is the correct place to ask this. I have a 91 toyota pickup with the 22re motor. When I first start it cold it runs rough idles bad. as it warms up for a few seconds it improves but still not the gratest, I have put new plugs, wires, dist cap and rotor. but still the same thing. Last night I took it for a spin and as I would driving about 55 and come to a hill I'd have to downshift cause it would start losing power. Even after I'd downshift I'd try and give it more gas but there's no response. get over the hill and it would get its speed back. I have not checked the timing yet but I did check the codes from the ecm and the codes I'm getting is 24 and 31 but I dont know if the MAF is bad or if it's something else. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Look into the coolant temperature sensor, or almost sounds like a clogged cat.

Find the factory service manual ( can download them online) or get a hayes manual.

Sounds like something is causeing it to run rich no idea what though

I'm a little confuse so forgive me if I sound nieve, how would the temp coolant sensor effect it running rough? I had a s-10 one time that done the same thing had no power and took it to the muffler shop they took out the catalytic converter ran great after that. Is there any way I can tell if the converter might be stopped up. Let me add this the guy I bought my toyota from must have driven it a lot on the dirt roads cause when I got it the air filter was clogged up with dirt, and the whole truck inside and underneath was covered in dirt sand in the floorboard it was bad I got it all cleaned up but you think this could be a sign to the converter being stopped up? just a suggestion.

when I put the new cap and rotor and wires on it I started it for the first time and it was idling kinda rough so I lossened and turned the dist a little seemed like it might have helped at the time but i guess not do you think moving it and possible it being out of time a little would cause this? I'm gonna put a timing light on it this eve and set it.

Try your TPS sensor. I have a 91 pickup 22re. It shut off the one day and never started up. So i figured it was a new dizzy. Got that and it started. Then found out the radiator was shot. Headgasket blew, so i got blue devil, Fixed the headgasket. Radiator had oil in it so i flushed it. Then it started Surge idling. I got a new TPS (Throttle Position Sensor.) put it on and it worked. I had the same codes too by the way. When i reset the codes i was fine nothing was wrong. I think for the TPS it was 66 bones brand new. But try your TPS sensor.

Also i put a new rad in and got a new thermostat and its fine (for now) hopefully it lives for another 200,000

It's possible the AFM could be messed up. Especially since the air filter was very dirty, some debris could have made it through and damaged the internals. Just a thought.

^-- x2 my thoughts as well.

-Sounds like a possible sticky Air Flow Meter air door.

-Dirty and or contaminated AFM components.

You could give it a few love taps and see if the engine clears up.

-If so then you know you have found your culprit.

Clogged cat should glow red -- being hotter than usual -- if you look under your truck after driving at night.

I just installed a new Engine coolant temp sensor in my 3.0 and it fixed my rough/cold start issue. I did however have the code 22 (ECT sensor) and code 32 (AFM signal). Once I installed the ECT sensor I pulled the EFI fuse for a minute reinstalled and now no more codes. I did however and still have a rough idle once the truck is hot. The sensor did not help with this. It's like its running rich at times. I'm still trouble shooting that.

After i went and threw blue devil in the truck to try n fix the headgasket, i was on my way home with 1/2 ton of stone. As i was going up my hill it started sputtering and blowing smoke. Low and behold my head gasket blew. i checked the oil and milkshake was sitting in the oil pan. so i took the head off and am getting it shaved down. Is this a good idea or should i just get a new motor? i am going to reinstall the new head with all new gaskets obviously, but im new to toyotas and am wondering if anymore problems will occur.

Worm you're braver than I am with a poor running Toy and throwing 1K lbs in the bed and cracking the whip.... I bet that was fun.

Have them check the head and every component. Guides, seals, etc. you can check the cylinder top edge and cylinder walls for ridge and wear(scuffing). If there is a fingernail-snaggable ridge, ream it off and hone it. If there is scuffing, have it rebuilt or honed minimal. You may be cheaper to find a quality rebuilt long block...
