replaced alternator wont stay started 95 4runner

Alternator was bad replaced it. jumed battery since it was dead. When I jumo it sounds like a belt is screaming. When I disconnect the alternator the truck runs for another min then sputters out and dies. Had not problems with truck yesterday before alternator dies.
Please help I have to drive to MD tomorrow, gotta figure this out quick

Ok so when you start the truck you turn the engine over with the key, it starts but there is a loud squeel? And you just replaced the alternator. Sounds like you have too little tension on the belt. On the longest reach of the alternator belt push on it with your thumb, the deflection should be between a quarter inch and half inch and feel firm to very firm.
With the engine off, ( I know but you have to say it anyway) you can place a large screw driver between the engine and alternator and apply tension to the belt then tighten the alternator bolts. I'm assuming it does not have a belt tensioner on the bracket. Be careful where you stick the screwdriver especially if it slips as there is 12 Volts and lot of current available from the alternator terminals. You don't want to weld the screwdriver to the body work and cause more damage!

Tension the belt and you will be good to go.

Good luck
