Rebuilding an engine

Rebuilding an engine
I bought a '94 Hilux complete with rod knock on the included 22re. No problem, it's not my daily driver and I like projects. So, we've pulled the engine out of the truck, and now we're trying to decide on options. Being in Seattle, the option of going with a long block from Oregon Engine Rebuilders seems like it's too good to be true. Unlimited warranty, and only $1100 (plus core charge and shipping, hoping my core will qualify) will get me a new engine.
I've searched high and low on here for previous experiences, and while I do find some negative reviews, one guy who had major knocking after 9k miles, and then had problems with the replacement, I also see a fair number of positive experiences.
I guess my question is twofold:
1. Given the option of rebuilding the old engine and buying a long block, which would you do? Am I going to save myself heartache and trouble by just buying a remanufactured long block? Or is it worth it to do the work myself?
2. Who all has specific negative experiences with Oregon Engine Rebuilders? What exactly is the concern? Are they doing things (reusing parts) that they shouldn't? How about positive experiences with Oregon Engine? Anyone on here with a long-lived (50-100k+ mile) rebuilt engine from OER?
3. Orient Engine's website is down; are they out of business? Any engine rebuilders in the Pacific Northwest that you'd recommend?
