Question on engine removal

Hi Guys,
My $300.00 '88 4WD 22RE project truck is turning into a bad dream. Front seal leaked first. Speedi sleeve and seal fixed that. Now the back seal is leaking(almost pouring). Odometer shows 233,877 and it has a lot of blow by but no smoke and is quiet as a church mouse. My question is, Can I pull the engine w/o pulling trans???. Never been into one of these engines so don't know how long the input shaft is. Looks like if I pull radiator, fan and maybe water pump she oughta come out.. Also have new pinion bearing seal and sleeve to put in the rear.. another leak!!! I guess that's what happens when one of these trucks sit for a long time.. On a brighter note. My A/c had R12 and I switched it over(after buying a new dash switch) and seems to be holding a charge. Anyway I know it's a simple question but I sure don't want to pull the trans/transfer out unless it's absolutely necessary. Will be looking for an engine kit, probably .020 over.. Any suggestions on cams?? Will mostly use this thing for a parts runner.
Thanks

it's probably quiet because the valves are out of adjustment.

it'll come out without removing the water pump, but i'd run a compression check on it before doing anything.

For $300.00 what did you expect ??

If you decided to go with a cam then you may as well go with the oversize valves .

port and polish the head .

up graded exhaust system to remove the gases faster

Other wise your just wasting money.

These engines build the power in the head very expensive for little gain .
