Question about welded diffs

After welding the spider gears, do you have the option of changing the diff gears? I want to lock this rear up to ride some trails now, and upgrade to 5.29's after I get some other stuff done to it.

It's on a 1980 short wheel base, tight budget, trail only truck.

As long as the carrier and ring gear are not altered by the welding of the spider gears, should be possible to change out the ring gear after wards.
