In just about any purpose-built rig, the biggest thing that gets left out is defining a purpose for the rig.
With that in mind, what is your exact planned usage? General daily driver / light trail rig / camping up to a week? Or are you planning on staying longer than a week? How often will you use this rig? What kind of terrain will you usually be operating on?
Also, what are the exact current stats of your truck, so that we have some idea of what can be left alone, and what might need improving?

With your budget you should be able to build a pretty nice rig. Im just gonna give you a description of what all is in my 85, maybe you can take some ideas. (note: i bought the truck from a friend who actually built it and i have continued the project, so most of the work was not done by me)
First off my engine, good ol 22re with an LC Engineering header. Axles have got 4.88's with a lock rite up front, tru trac in the rear. (If i could afford it i would go detroits or even ARB's). Diff breathers for going through water, front is located in the engine bay, rear is placed above the gas tank. Im running 4.7 gears in a single t-case.
My lift is 4.5" National lift springs (pricey but very good quality) and 2.5" extended shackles. Rancho 9000 adjustable shocks. Running 35x12.5 bfg muds.
Protecting my body are all-pro rock sliders, a smittybilt front bumper (not the best), and currently no rear bumper since i mashed it on the rocks and havn't gotten it straightened out yet... Also have a huge roofrack which measures 102" by 51"
Just recently got my hi steer kit installed with the ifs box, truck drives super straight now...
Other goodies include a cb, pioneer stereo and amp, and my sweet camoflauge seat covers. Im sure i've forgotten things, but i think i got all the important stuff.
My "someday" plans include winch, snorkel, ARB's countless other things...
This truck has been built well enough that it is reliable enough to be my daily driver (i probably drive it close to 500 miles a week). But it is also capable enough to handle very difficult trails (however i like my straight body, so its use is somewhat limited). Also i have no fears in driving it several hours to the trails. As a matter of fact im taking it up to the mountains to go snowboarding tomorrow and am leaving in 3.5 hours so i should probably go to bed!
Hope that was helpful...

go to your photobucket album you want the pics from, scroll over the thumbnails, as you do that you will see 4 options come up under or to the right of the picture.
select the bottom one, IMG code--copy and paste that into your post
it will look something like
sorry quick and dirty paint job, hope it helps

one, get that license plate pic off here. And 2, that's not a lift... That's a spring killing shackle, and rear blocks... And 3, get some steel guides and or a head job on that engine NOW! Reassemble with an AISIN clutch and you'll be good for another 100,000 miles.
Beautiful truck to be a 85... Looks like my hack job 86 87 Turbo 4runner some jackass swapped the vin plates to an 85 on...
It's basically a 20MPG, compact version of a Landcruiser now?
Only it's part time, leaf sprung and a 4 cylinder...
I've owned them all or worked on them and I'll be the 1st to tell you the build quality is the same...
And forget a 13MPG highway FzJ80... Good god...

my main focus with a lift is just to fit bigger tires. from what i have read in here, tires, lockers, armor and recovery are all you need to have a good, capable rig. what's a good lift to comfortably fit 35's?

Marlin or AllPro... But I'd look for a Q78 wich is supposed to be @ 10" wide...
I hate 35/12.50's... You don't need them, they have a ton of drag and weight, and IMO the wider the contact patch, the more it will break parts...
Sad part is there are few tire in that size... I contacted BFG about making a 35/10.50 you can to if you want...
And stay away from the Super Swamper 35/10.50 SSR. It has a very weak sidewall.

let's talk about lockers now. i have been trying to read up on and decide between the detroit locker and the arb air locker...it seems that i cant get a satisfying answer. which would be better for expedtitions? I am leaning toward the detroit because of its simplistic design, but the air lockers for convenience. i am willing to sacrifice convenience for reliability, but i also need to look for tire conservation. I am also thinking tru-trac up front?? help please...
