I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, but I went to the local parts store to pick up an OBD 2 diagnostics reader. When I looked at the box, it said that it worked on vehicles 1996 and newer. I have a 1995 4runner so this was no help. Is there a machine out there for 1995 and older vehicles that I have not heard about.

This will tell you how:

You don't need the SST shown to jump the connections, something as simple as a paperclip will work very well.

My engine light doesn't come on or flash, but my motor idles fine for a couple of minutes, idle's down to about 500 rpm then gives a pop at random times (very inconsistent). The pop sounds like it is coming from the air intake, but i can't pinpoint, so I was hoping the machine could help. Talked to the local toyota dealership tech and he said tps or loose vacuum lines. I checked all the lines and they are tight.

TPS info and adjustment

You'll need to figure out your engine light issue. Maybe it's just a bad bulb.

Did you check out the link I gave you? There is a process to pull the codes.

The light will generally not stay on or flash whenever the key is in to indicate a problem.

You need to go through the process, get the codes and then see if they will help you troubleshoot the problem. If you are unsure what the codes mean, post them up for further help, or search for a code list online. Haynes or the FSM will also have a list.
