I know this is a noob question. I have an 86 and I don't know how to work the 4-low. I have to get out and lock the hubs but after that I don't know. Theres no dieagram. Can someone help me? lol thanks

you usually only use the low gears if your stuck all you do is lock your hubs an bring it to four high slide it right an push it up should go if you have the shifter like i think you do an if you have troubles putting it in try to back up a few feet an try it then make sure you are in neutral when you do it

I do it opposite... get the t-case in 4-lo then lock the hubs.
then shifting out, I get it to 2-hi and unlock the hubs (if I know I'm not going to need 4wd).

Not me! I love going 10 mph in 3rd gear! I pretty much leave it in 4lo all the time when wheeling. I like letting the engine do the work and just let it take me down the hills at a snails pace. Put it in first, let out the clutch, and let it wheel itself (well, almost).
But the rest of what you said sounds like it should get him into 4lo.

Either way there is 1up-left click... thats 2h(normal driving) then thers all the way down is 4h(4wheel drive high gearing) then from there is right and up. Thats N(god to keep your truck in neutreal when parked oer night ... most people will try and steal it not figure out that its in neutreal in the tranfercase) Then theres 1 more up 4L thats the one right there. I usaly put it in 4l and have my offical spotter/copilot get out and lock my hubs. Another thing you can do with the manual locking hubs is not lock the hubs and drop it in 4L and then you will have 2wd lowrange. Not really sure why you would do this but in my case I got mix matched gears in front and rear diff so its nice to have little lower range with out ing up my tcase. Hope I helped a little more then confuse you. Welcom to the world of offroading! Stay safe have fun.
