No oil getting to the oil filter?

So I bought a 83 sr5 4x4, just dropped a 22r in it from another 83 4x4. I hadnt ran the motor all that much but it is a good runner. So after I put the motor in the truck I went to change the oil and oil filter. I take off the oil filter and it looks like no oil has even circulated through it. looks dry... the motor has sat for a few months not being ran and I havent ran it yet, wanted to change the fluids first. Normally when I have taken off oil filters they are full of oil. Could this be just from sitting or do I have something else to worry about?

could just be from sitting...check to see if it pumps some oil out!

leave the filter off and turn the motor over a couple of times..should squirt some out LOL..(of course with coil wire unhooked.....)

that's just me talking...i would do that..but not turn it over more than once or twice

i remember sometimes changing my oil and no oil coming out of the filter...other people have had the same problem, although mine shows 20psi at idle..

Okay I will try and see if that works, it just seems weird that the filter is bone dry. Dont want to damage the motor at all.

i don't blame ya dude, i don't like risking my motor either.

like i said though only turn it over a couple of times, any more than that and you could risk damaging the motor if the oil pump has failed.

how many cranks would it take to prime the system, if I just drained the oil and added new oil? Anyone know. I just ran down to the parts store and ordered a new pump. Should get it on tuesday, just in time for my 4 day weekend.

How many miles are on the motor, it might be a good idea to look at the timing chain and guides while your at it.

So I just talked to my Dad about the situation and he said by turning it over with no filter, all it would do is suck air and not pump oil. So I guess what I need to do is Put the filter on and crank it, then check the filter again.
