Newbie diving in.....big time!!

OK, I just wanted to say hello to everyone on this forum and now let me tell you all a lil about what I am doing.

I just got a FREE truck, 96 SR5 4Runner 3.4L, but it came with a catch.....broken crankshaft key. Well the previous owner let it sit for over a year and it was dirty as hell and full of spider webs inside and out. So I now have the truck and I cleaned the crap out of it. The truck is immaculate inside and out.

So, instead of just fixing the problem(motor has 144,000), I purchased a used motor with 69,000 for $800. I have alot of resources in the automotive business since I work in it so I am replacing just about everything under the hood. New Radiator, Condenser, Drier, Compressor, timing belt, water pump, t-stat, plugs, wires, belts, hoses and every sensor on the motor. I am in the process of doing the engine swap now. All of the parts are getting cleaned, sand blasted and painted black to match the truck.

I wanted to get a lil more power so I got a K&N FIPK, TB spacer, URD balancer and exhaust. I will keep you all informed of all the work I am doing and let you all know how I am doing. As of now, the old motor is 85% out, I just have to remove the exhaust and trans bolts/converter and it's out.

Any and all tips/advise is appreciated.

Cliff

First off, welcome to YT! youre already experiencing this weird sensation of a lighter wallet i see. sounds like you got a pretty killer deal, even if you have to do all that work. the work is half the fun! let us know how it goes and feel free to ask about any questions.

Best of luck to you on this.

Here's a thread you may be able to find some good about your swap:

Just remember that's he's swapping a 3.4L into a 94 Runner that had the 3.slow engine

Welcome, you may want to check the TRD supercharger instead of the K&N, waste of money on 4Runners, and spacer.

I already have one vehicle with a SC on it and I just want a basically stock truck. Just about everything I own and owned was highly modified. If anything else I wanted to do was maybe an OME lift.

I will get some pics up as soon as I lower the resolution of the ones I took for the assembly part of my swap.

OK, here is an update. Last night I started breaking down the new/used engine when I got to the balancer.....guess what, same deal as the motor that was in the truck!! The crank had several marks in it. It seems that when some mechanics change the timing belt, they seem to not put the balancer on all the way. So, I am getting another engine from my source ASAP and the first thing that I am doing is taking the balancer off.

The bolt that holds the crank pulley on is supposed to be replaced when removed... most shops dont..

As far as the photos, upload them to photobucket.. they will resize them if to large..

Here is another update.......the motor I got also has a bad crank, so the guy who I bought the used engine through is crediting(cash) me for a crank kit with bearings. I took the oil pan off last night and inside the motor is very clean. I can't wait to get her on the road.
