I just purchased an 87 toyota pickup, 4cyl 4x4. I've been on the site now for a month or so doing research like crazy on what to do as far as making it more "capable" off road, while not hurting its commuting abilities signifigantly.

Through some serious searching (not my first forum lol), I have come up with this list to fulfill my needs. (A lot of this is based on the sticky for newbs in the newb tech forum)

-SS IFS brace
-Budbuilt skid
-Budbuilt Crossmember
-Stubb's Rocksliders from SS
-Aussie Rear Locker
-some 4.88's (Reccomend a brand?)
-BFG T/A KOs 31/10.5/15s

Mods are kind of in order, probably over the next 6 to 8 months. Did I do good for my first time?

PS: Truck is mainly for non-highway commuting, roughly 20 miles round trip for most of the year. Hoping to see some weekend camping and some trails. As I build skill, will begin to see some rocks. IE: Charleu Gap in Tucson and such.

 

looks good, trade thos bfg's for some treadwrights and ull save about 500, and if you want a little bit more flex, search for ford F-150 rear springs, if you cant find anything about it pm me and i can tell you how to mount them n such. go to treadwright.com they have diff treads you can choose from, also these are RE-treads nothin wrong with them tho, also come in a BFG KO config too if you like that design

 

I checked out treadwrite, they are all backordered in the size I want. But i'll keep checking back. What the shipping cost from them? I can get a set of new BFG TA KOs for about 600 on my truck.

 

You can do 33s with 4.88s. And 31s with 4.56s. Unless your just doing it for the acceleration, your highway RPMs will be high.

 

I haven't done as much research on the trie sizes, although it was my understanding that I can't do 33s without some lift or body modification. I didn't plan any lifting for a long time. I'll check out some 4.56s, but I don't want to get it done, then have to regear if I do decided on bigger tires. 33 is as big as I would ever go though.

As far as highway driving, this truck will see very little if at all. I only ever went on the freeway to get to Phoenix (which now I have my fiances Corolla), or to go down to get my emmissions done.

 

What gears are in there now?

 

I know its stock, but I'll check sometime tomorrow to see. Thats located in the door panel right? (I know I saw it somewhere on here.)

 

 

They will be coming. I don't have a digital camera, so that means I need to steal my brothers while I'm at my parents house. I'll get them up in the next fews days for sure.

 

Take it from me, Dont waste the money on the 31's right away, Just go to 33's..

In ocotober when my old truck needed tires I should have just said screw it and gotten the 33's..I got 31's and regretted it the whole time because it just held me back..

Cool, I will keep that in mind. Tires will be one of the last things I do, just because of the cost, and it already has good life on its current tires.

I'm just itching to start modding, my dad's friend is a total toyota buff, has a crawled out shell of a 4runner that been on extreme4x4 on spike. He will definatly be a part of my truck lol. Also, I just realized that SS and MasterZUK are both located in Phoenix... Woot for hour roadtrips!!

edit: Would a 2in lift suffice for 33s? Or would I need something more drastic?

 

I've met both Steve at SS and ZUK and they are both awesome guys. ZUK installed a Detroit locker and the famous ZUK coils on my 4Runner - and he lives less than 2 miles from me. It's great to live so close to 2 really talented guys.

 

Hell I'm just glad I live in the same state lol. I've yet to read anything bad about either of those guys, they will definatly be getting my business. Now I just have to wait until payday...

Is the order of my mods good? Also, would motive gears be a good choice? I actually had motive 4.10s for my Mustang, but in the mustang world, a lot of guys consider them cheap and reccomend FRPP or Richmond.

edit: (Just realized, I would probably get the sliders and Brace from SS first, then the budbuilt stuff.)

if i was going to be spending money on tires i would second going to 33's right off the bat(after everything else though), im not positive what lift is required, but i think 33's might fit stock on an 87, perhaps with a little trimming, but would be a lot more functional with a 2 or 3 inch body lift or bj spacers up front and new coils in the rear. both routes are pretty inexpensive and an easy install.

 

I was going to do 31s but i got a deal on some 33s and I am so glad that I skipped the whole 31" stage.

 

Alrighty guys, you've swayed me to the ways of the 33s. for the extra 200 bucks, I can get 33/10.5/15s in a BFG TA KO.

Would a Wabfab 2in lift suffice for this? Is that lift a body or suspension? I'm kind of unclear about those. (Still doing some searching of course.)

 

Alrighty, so I did some more research and it seems that the 2in wabfab lift is an IFS lift, so suspension. I guess that should have made sense before lol. ( I R NEWB ) So I will possibly be adding that to my "to do" list.

 

I love my treadwrights they are awesome for the price, never had any problems with them
