New member seeking answer...
Hey everybody, I am new to this site and took the time to get registered just so I could pick yall's brains a little.
I am currently looking at a 1986 ex-cab Toy with a bad motor. I have a motor out of Celica Supra but not sure what year model. I think it is pre-86 but not positive. I know it had a trunk and not a hatchback if that helps and was extremely sporty looking and was marked turbo. I took it out to put in another truck but that project is another story and now all I have is the motor.
So I guess what I am asking is will this motor work in the truck and did I give yall enough info to answer my question? Thanks, Jamie Ramey.

welcome to the site. Need some specs on the motors. The original from the truck,(3vze, 22re, 22r?) And the car motor 22r, 22re, other??? With that being said you can make many things work in your truck just depends on your ability.

got ya i thought you were talking about a 7mgte the turbo inline six. im not sure if the car motors had bosses for motor mounts in the same location as the trucks. however you can fab stuff to make it work, might run into oil pan and pickup differences but those could probably be swapped over, as well as the cam might be different but if you found a turbo 22re i would jump on it

I got the motor sitting in the shop. I took it out of the car a few years ago and never put it anything. It was running but has a slight miss and when I pulled the timing cover, well it needs a timing chain kit. But ran good except for the small miss but could very easily been a wire or plug. I have just been looking and waiting for a good deal on a truck to come along that is in need for a motor and I have found a nice, clean '86 with a knocking motor. And thought this would be a perfect match but wanted some second opinions.

I looked into this because I almost bought a Celica motor for my truck, the oil pan and pickup will need to be switched over as it is different, I also think that maybe the electronics might be a little different but other than that it will bolt right in. I also thought that the Celica Supra's only came in hatchback with the 6 cylinder motor but I may be wrong.

Well I got the truck and must say after cleaning it up good under the hood, it looks like everything is in good shape. I was really impressed to see everything in tact.
Now for the bad. It has a nasty knock down deep. Either a rod or main. What would be yall's opinion on just doing a bearing job. Is it worth trying or is this a bad idea?
And also, I discovered lots of oil on the inside of the intake. I say lots, but I rubbed my finger around in it and my finger was oil covered. What can cause this? And I am talking about the front of the intake where the rubber air tube goes on coming from the air filter on the opposite side of the truck. Any ideas?

A lot of people get the Celica and the Celica Supra mixed up The Supra always had the inline 6 motor but with these cars no telling it is possible some one could have put a 22rec engine in.
pictures of the car engine would be a big help
along with knowing the correct year the engine
The engine electronics and the merging of the wire harness could be interesting. You will need to go about it one of 2 ways swap the car harness out complete along with all sensors, distributor, igniter, and etc then install all these goodies from the truck. Or use the car harness with the car ECU and all the car engine goodies
I take it both engines are fuel injected so the correct fuel pump is in the tank?
As stated the oil pan and pickup need to be changed to one from a 4X4 of that era 22R series engine
There may also need to be some minor changes in the throttle linkage when I swapped a throttle body from a Celica to a 4Runner but it was a few years ago.

Well now yall are starting to scare me. I was planning on just using the block and head out of the car. And as far as info on the car, it is gone. All I have left is the motor.
But I do know that the car was marked Toyota Celica Supra and I remember somewhere it had Turbo on it but the Trubo was in small letters and it is a 22re. I will try to find a picture of the car and other info.

i believe the 22RE was the base for the turbo version so that shouldnt matter much.
Ok, dont be scared here! lol if you have a complete motor that just knocks in the truck already its as simple as you thought: use the long block you have and all the other accessories. The only difference I'm aware of in the 22R series are the early generation had a different exhaust port. There may be other differences but that is the give away that its the older version. I just did a similar project, son barbequed the center main bearing and left it knocking (and with me) so I bought a 22R long block and did the swap.
easy thing to do? pull the knocker out, start the disassembling process and compare them! if for some reason its WAY different, your part way there on rebuilding the knocker! if for some reason it doesnt work out, I have an 87 22RE with 160,000 on it that ran great in Mississippi i'd let you have right!

Well that makes me feel better.
LOL. I have all my gaskets, oil, filter, ect. I am just waiting for a new oil pump and intake gasket to come in and then it's get-r-done time. I pulled the hood and drained antifreeze last night and here in a little while, I should have it swinging.

I hope this link works. This is what the car looked like only it was black and not a convertible. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1985-...item2a10a8e94b

That is a Celica.
Like I said no telling what might have been done a Turbo was never a factoy option in a Celica
That looks to be a 85 so you should be fine with all the engine parts swapping

Judging from that pic you should be good. that looks like a vanilla 22RE. the "turbo" badge you mentioned puzzles me.......
if it had a turbo the intake tube, exhaust manifold and air box tube would be different but if you are using the externals off your trucls motor it really doesnt matter!

Sorry guys, I went and looked at the intake and valve cover just to be sure and it is in fact just a 22re. I was certain I seen Turbo somewhere but I guess I was mistaken. Anyway, I got everything off the front and left side. Almost there!! I can't believe the original condition of this thing, and everything is in good shape. The only thing I have broke so far is the snorkel going from the breather box to the grill. I hope these are available.

Well I didn't get it out today. I left it alone since I have to get up at 3:30 for work. And since I work out of town, I guess it will have to wait till next weekend. Which will work to my favor since I am waiting on an oil pump and one more gasket. I am very excited about this project and will be even more excited when I am driving it.
I guess it's true what momma said, "boys will have toys."

Well, due to bad weather Wednesday, we have to work this weekend. So it looks like it will be next weekend before I get to get grease on my hands. It stinks but it stinks a lot worse for those affected by the storms.
