hi there im new to this forum ..
it was brought to my attention that this site would be the best place for me to try and figure out how to fix my problem .
but every time i tryed to contact someone on the other threads i was declined .
is there any way you or someone else can help me with my problem . its an electrical problem and it is between an 89 and a 92 4 runner . thanks .

 

Hi Welcome to YT. I am not sure what the problem you are having posting, maybe trying to post in the wrong section.
so a better description of what your issue would be helpful:
It is electrical and between an 89 and a 92 4Runner. did you move a functioning part from the 89 to a 92 and now it won't work?

more specifics are helpful as there are differences between the two vehicles.
IE: an ECU from a 3.0 equipped 89 4Runner automatic will not work for a 22RE equipped 92 4Runner speed...

 

are you plugging the 89 into the 92? you have to plug them in, newer into older, not older into newer.

if that doesn't make sense, then perhaps you should start by explaining your problem with a little more detail.

 

ok . here's what i did . i took a 92 4 runner that had a 3 ltr with a auto tranny and pulled it due to the engine being blown and the tranny was not working . i bought a 89 4 runner with a 22re engine and a 5 speed tranny to put in the 92 4 runner .

im not concerned with mounting the engine and the tranny and im also changing the front diff to . and the clutch pedal conversion will be ok for me to .

here is the problem . the harness that is for the engine and the ecu for the engine is obviousely different and will not plug into the interior portion af the 92 . so with what tj884rdlx said has me concerned . it does make sense and that is what i have . old into new . it is clear to see that the interior section of the 92 will not plug into ecu and the harness of the 89 and that is my problem .

what i need now is a solution cause i was told that the hardest thing about this conversion is doing the clutch and brake pedals . but that is a peice of cake .
to have some advise on what to do would be greatful . thanks .

Maybe someone can help you out.

It is not hard what you need to do with the wiring diagrams of both year vehicles.

You need to merge the the 22rec and ecu harness into the vehicle harness .

So it all looks nice and professional . This might mean changing the pins and plugs on parts of the harness.

With out knowing the connector pin outs and wire colors it can be a bewildering mass of wires and plugs.

 

ok so what i have to do then is look up the scematics for both harnessis and figure out what wire from the 92 harness needs to go to what pin on the 89 ecu is that right .

if so my other question would be will every thing work .
only reason why i ask is because the 92 has more instrumintaion than the 89 does .
but i can deal with that if it will start up and shut off .

improbly going to wind up with left over wiring im thinking .
there looks to be a lot more to the 92 harness than the 89 .

It is pretty much the merging or interfacing so the gauges work .

The charging system works like it should. It starts and shuts off when it should

In your neck of the woods that the heater works.

What you are doing is a engine swap although opposite of what most do.

You might want to read some of the swap threads to get a better understanding of what your doing and getting into.

 

well the bottom line is that the wiring harness inside the 92 has to be taken apart from the plugs and spliced into the ecu and harness for the 89 22 re .

is that right . and is there a sticky note with any tips . if so where do i find these sticky notes . thanks guys .

if there is any further info bring it on cause ill bet cha im gonna need it .

 

here is a good question . what if i got a wiring harness and ecu from a 90's model 4 runner that has a 22 re engine .or would i still be in the same situation .

 

-I was under the impression, that the ecu had to be the ecu for the engine that it runs.

-The wiring harness can be converted from an old one, as long as everything goes from the ecu where it's supposed to, to the sensor that it is supposed to hook into.

-The dash/chassis wiring harness can be wired into pretty much any ecu, as they are pretty basic, but the ecu runs the fuel management and what not for the engine.

That may all be wrong assumptions, but it is what I have gathered from my swap research.

 

i've tried searching 22re swap on google, but i can't find anything that's directly related to swapping a 22re in place of the 3.0. but i'm sure there's info out there, and i'm sure there's someone here who's done it and documented it.

you're going to need to spend some time google searching unless someone specifically knows where the info you need is.

i wish i could help you more with this, but i know nothing about the v6's. good luck.

 

well what i need to find is the info that tells me to put what wire from the 92 dash harness to the input of the 89 ecu . if i can find that info im laughing . that is the only hard thing about doing this swap to me . i just want the electrical end of this swap to be over . the mechanical end is easy to me and ive pretty much have all that done .

off to google i go . wish me luck .

 

-download the pinouts for both ecu's.

-match up the wires

-important: do it one at a time, and remove each pin from the connector (do not cut a wire)

I believe:

as long as the ecu & engine wiring harness match the engine that they are running, then the chassis/dash wiring harnesses can be rewired into almost any ecu.

so if the engine is a 22re, and the ecu is a 3vze... I don't think it will run the engine (or at least wont run it properly)

but if the engine is a 22re, and the ecu is 22re, then the dash/chassis harness from a 3vze can be wired to it
and if the engine is a 3vze, and the ecu is 3vze, then the dash/chassis harness from a 22re can be wired to it.

 

i think the the clouds are parting over my garage and my family is coming out of there rooms .

but yes . i bought a donor and everything the engine the wiring the ecu . and all of the components that im using are from the donor . i did drive the donor for a couple of days but the body was so bad that i had to take it off the road .
