Hello all!

My wife and I have an '05 4Runner SR5 4WD. As my user name suggests, we like to go out into the desert, particularly to places you can't get in a passenger car. We don't do anything radical, and stick to established "roads" and washes that have obviously been traveled.

So far, the 4Runner is completely stock, and we're considering some very minor modifications. We've scraped the skid plates a couple of times, and are thinking either a little more clearance or a little less bounce might be nice. Oh, it came with the 17 inch wheels.

So, without getting radical and keeping our use in mind, what would you suggest?

I don't know! How would I figure that out? I guess my prepurchase research wasn't as thorough as I thought...

 

The XREAS comes standard on sport models and optional on the limiteds. If you have the base SR5 model you do not have it. A mild lift with slightly bigger tires is probably what you would want.

I spend a lot of my time in the desert around Tucson. The biggest bang for the buck in my oppinion was installing the 3" OME lift and the largest tire that still fit in the spare tire hanger. I've gone a little nuts on additional mods since then but if you install a 3" lift and get more aggressive offroad tires, you will be happy on 90% of the well traveled back roads.

 

Thanks for the input. We're leaning toward a coil and shock lift, maybe some better tires, and possibly some armor.

With a coil and shock lift does anything else need to be changed? Any problems with steering, brakes, transmission, etc.?

 

hey rookie, did u get a chance to read the faq? that faq is comprehensive in that it should state every item needed for each modification. If it is not listed it is not needed.

I did read it - great info. It is because of info there that we are leaning toward coils and shocks first. My guess was that it would have said if anything else was needed, but I wanted to be sure.

 

Going with the OME Springs and Shocks, nothing else is required. Just get a fresh alignment after installing the lift. Your idea of additional body armor sounds like a good second step.

Even when you install larger tires you won't have to do anything. By only going up to a 265/70/17 size (close to 32") you can use your spare tire storage area and the gearing is not effected enough to notice the difference.

 

I have been looking at lifts and can't decide which one to purchase. The ome medium duty springs or the complete toytec lift 3in front and 2in rear. I am curantly running 265 70 17 nitto tera grapplers. I am worried that the toytec lift will raise the front to much and it will sit to high. Has anybody installed this kit on there 4th gen yet? Any help on this would be greatly apprecated thanks
