New Guy with fuel delievery question

Hello everyone, Yotatech.com looks like an awesome website built on years of experience. I'm glad to be part of it!. My name is Zack, and I just bought a 1985 Pickup, 22r (carb), solid front axle, reg cab, 4x4.. I got it for a good price, but when I bought it, the previous owner "primed" teh carb with some gasoline, and got it started. It ran a little rough, and I was told it needed the carbe replaced, or rebuilt. After warming up it run good enough for me to drive it home.

Anyways, whats an intro post without a dumb question..

Whe I got the truck home, I could start it by primeing the carb (pouring a small about of gas in teh carb) to get it started, it would run rough till it got warmed up and then would run better.. A few days have pasted and now I can't get it started.. The enige will start if i prime the carb, but will only contiue to run while I'm drizzeling the gas in the top of the carb. The previous owner has just put a brand new mechincal fuel pump on the truck, I assume to attempt to fix this problem.

My question is; Is there a in tank pump that could have given out? Clogged Filter? Any tips or advice on troublshooting this problem? I really want to get this truck on the road, so other than a new carb, what else should I replace to get the fuel system up to par?

Thanks in advance,

Zack

As far as i know there is no in tank fuel pump, just the one mounted on the engine. The fuel filter is mounted on the frame down by the gas tank. Also check the gas cap, if the tank is building presure that will keep fuel from flowing to the carb. If none of that works then you might need to rebuild the carb, also while your at it check all of the vacuum lines for cracks and make sure there all hooked up properly.

There are no emission checks where I live here in Arkansas. Other than the vacuum advance line, what vac lines need to be hooked up? it appears a few are capped.

Make sure your vacuum advance is hooked up properly, and also make sure the vacuum advance diaphragms are good. For some reason the fuel bowl on a toyota carb drain all or most of the fuel when there off for a period of time, there have been several threads about that problems on here. You might consider removing the carb and taking it a part and cleaning it out on the inside, it not as hard as it looks, when i had my 84 4Runner i did the same thing and it helped.
