New To Forum - Looking for Suspension Ideas

My name is Chris. I'm from Roanoke, VA. I just recently purchased my 4th toyota to tune of a 91 red xcab 3.0L 5spd 4x4 (all stock). this is my second time owning a 3.0L , but I'm still learning. The truck has 140K on the body and 50K on the factory recall rebuild. I have all paper work showing new parts added - got lucky there. Anyways ... ... ...

I'm looking to lift my truck only a couple inches and run a nice set of 31x10.50x15 or 265x75x16 - I haven't decided. I was running 4+3 on my old truck, but dont have a desire for that much lift again. I have been looking at NWOR for their 1.5-2" lift (includes 25mm torsion bars, poly bump stops, and 40% longer tapered rear AAL or New Rear Springs).

I haven't found any info on small lifts on my type truck on the site from the search. So, I'm asking if anyone has any ideas about lifting the truck other then what I have stated. I don't have a lot of money to spend on the truck, but can make things work. I'm more of a min. lift w/ good function kinda wheeler. Easy to Med trails is the where I stay. My 99 I was running 3" and 31's and couldn't have been happier. I would like to stay about that with this truck also.

Thanks in advanced for you help and hope to see everyone around more. I'm also on www.TRDoffroad.com (new message board, good group)

welcome to YT. There are a bunch of guys from VA. We try and wheel often.

Perhaps some BJ spacers, new shcoks and LC coils in the rear. Leave the torsion bars alone for a better ride

31's should fit with no lift, no problem.

I guess I'm really new to lifting an IFS because I didn't know they made spacers for them like the tacomas. Where's a good place to read up on the facts and different companies? I'm open to suggestions. The pros and cons are what I'm looking for basically. Also, I dont have coils in the rear. I should have mentions it's a PICKUP not a 4RUNNER. sorry.

I know that I can fit 31s, but I was looking for function offroad. I was thinking that 1-2 inches of lift would give the truck a little better stance and help when going offroad.

welcome to the board...as far as lift like Bj spacers you need to get in contact with Phil (strap22) here on the boards because he has the Bj spacers. They are fairly easy to install too. It adds 1.5" of lift for the front and you can slide 31's under it easily. You are maybe an hour away from me so if ya need any help on anything just let me know!

If it doesn't require any lift to put 31s then what size backspacing do I need to look for in order to keep them tucked in for the most part. I'm looking for function when it comes to this truck. I wanna stay away from body lifts, 4-5inch drop down, and SAS because I can't afford nor do I want any of those on my truck.

What would be so wrong with the 25mm torsion bars and AAL? I know that it might stiffen up the ride some, but isn't that the same as the spacers on my 99?

I don't really know that much about the IFS on my model truck. I didn't do a lot of research the last time I owned one, so I'm still real new. Any and all information would be great.

Thanks in Advanced...Chris

The 25mm torsion bars would stiffen the front up significantly! Unless you are putting a winch and bigger bumper up front then I would not recomment them. with the BJ spacers you are able to lift up the front and relax the torsions a little to give you more comfort and flexibility with the IFS. strap22 also has some OME torsion bars that will be a little thicker than stock but not as much as 25mm. I think they are around the tune of 22mm or so. He can chime in and give ya exact specs.

Oh the backspacing...I got some MT's that are 6 on 5.5. Mine don't rub with the stock setup.

CALLMEJ75 - That's awsome man. Yeah you are really close. Do you have any pictures of your truck that I could see exactly how it would look with the BJ Spacers and 31's? I see you added a 1" diff drop - Is that necessary when doing the spacer lift? I have manual hubs - so that means the CV's should be ok for the most part correct? what would you suggest for the rear? Do I need to buy new shocks when doing this 1.5" of lift? Like I stated, I'm really new to lifting this body style IFS.

I don't have the BJ spacers and I just sold mine like 2 weeks ago too. But here is a pic of my 4runner stock with the T-bars cranked to about 1/2" before max.

Yeah I need to catch up with strap22 here soon. I'm hoping to see him post sometime this evening. If not, I can always PM him. Sounds to me like this would be the best way to lift and gain performance from the IFS. What about disconnects? Any good or use for them with this minimal of lift?

I know the bolt pattern is 6 on 5.5 - I was looking for the backspacing. I just can't remember which ways keeps the tire in more than out.

I got the diff drop but you could get them for security...but you got manual hubs so it shouldn't wear on the cv's as bad as mine does. The BJ spacer goes on top of your top ball joint...but you need an alignment afterwards. for the rear? Not sure about the leafs...I'm sure someone will chime in with an answer to that one.

Your runner looks real nice. I like the stance with the 31's. I hope I'm not bothering you by asking so many questions, but I feel like a nub because I don't know about my own suspension. I researched tacomas before because that's what I owned for the last couple years. Now I'm back to pre-taco and I don't know anything. Just let me know if I become annoying.

Knowing I wanna lift my truck, but keep in mind it's a Budget Buildup (recaping)

What all would you suggest for a 1.5" lift? Front and Rear <to level or slightly higher>.
Do I need to buy shocks?
Can I install myself? (with help from friends - old and new)
How much will it cost? (I don't have a lot of money to put towards a lift)

I think I got mine with the 3 5/16" backspacing. My bad...wasn't thinking. You can get disco's...it will give you some more flex out of it.

Thanks...it still needs quite a bit of work. You're not bothering at all. I think the BJ spacers are around $100 shipped. I'm sure I can get some friends together and come down to help ya out for install...its an easy job! As far as the back.,..not sure...have to get someone elses opinion on that one. You will need some new shocks too because I had stock shocks with my 1.5" lift on the rear and I broke the shock off one day so I called Phil up and he sent me front and rear shocks and steering stabilizer. He sells OME stuff so its a little pricey but you pay for what you get now days!

The Extra Cab Trucks use a leaf spring setup......FilthyRich you knew that!

Anyway..........
I'll have "Gumbo" shoot you a price quote for rear leafs, BJ spacers, OME shocks, Steering Stabilizer, OME T-bars. This setup will allow you to run up to 33" tires (mild inner fender pounder may be needed). If you need anything please just ask...we are here to help.............

31's will fit with the stock set up on stock rims. That is what a lot of the SR5's came with. I would personally stay with the stock torsion bars as anything stiffer will be overkill and you will lose some flexability & ride quality. The 16" size you were talking about should file also - it translates into a 32"X10.5"

Hey chris, welcome to the boards. This is philip. I thought I saw you the other day in a red toy and I am glad to see you want to get into some wheeling now.

To answer your question. 31/10.50's will fi fon your truck fine in the stock position without rubbing. I'm on 32/11.50's right now with very little rubbing. Still at stock height.

That sounds good to me. I don't need to run 33's though. I'm only going to be running 31x10.50 or 32x10.50.

How many inches of lift is that going to give my truck total? Would I need the stabalizer if I'm not going bigger than 31s? could I go with AAL instead of a replacement spring set? pros and cons?

sounds like a nice lift , but how much would all that run you think?
