New 4runner owner questions

Hello I just purchased a 2002 4runner SR5 sport with 68,000 miles on it. I got rid of a 2002 Range Rover because it was a peice of junk that has since made me gun shy about all cars.

I know this 4runner will be a much better vehicle but there are a few things that i am noticing, that being unfamiliar with the car, I am not sure whether or not are problems. For example, when accelerating, I am noticing a very slight hissing noise along with the engine noise. Is this normal?

Also sometimes when stopped at a light or stopped any time while in gear, the engine sounds noiser than at other times, and then it sounds like something switches off and the extra noise stops. Any ideas about what that is?

the last thing is, what is the button that shows the outline of the drivetrain with an "X" in the middle of it.

I know these are probably really stupid questions to you guys but, the only way for me to learn about this great vehicle is to ask, Thanks for your time and patience.

well, as far as i know the button with the X is the center diff lock. and as for the noise...does your 4Runner have A/C??? and is it on when you hear the noise? the 4Runner, does it have the TRD Turbo? that would make a similar noise to the hissing you hear.

Also remember if the Defroster is on the AC automatically comes on. Could it be an exhaust leak?
