New 22re owner valve tick
I just bought a 22re , I did a valve adjustment to spec the ticking was pretty loud so I put it to .007/.011 its still a little loud I was just wondering if this is just how these engines sound, thanks

Recheck your settings. That sounds a little loud to me. It is normal to tick though. It's a mechanical cam. Worn adjustment screws often make it difficult to get a consistent valve setting. The ends get hammered. Also worn rocker arm to shaft clearance. I always set mine cold at .007 and .011. You can try a go no go set of feeler gauges. Good luck and please follow up and let us know how it went.

Thank you, the first time I adjusted them hot to .008/.012 it was loud, I checked them the next morning hot and they were still at an 8/12 then I adjusted them hot to .007/.011 that’s the setting in the video. I see people putting them at .006/.010 I don’t know if I want to go that tight and burn up the valves

I had a bunch of trucks with 22RE's over the years and I set all of them at .007 and .011 cold. One time I got tired of my buddy telling me it was going to be too tight when hot and as fast as I could, pulled the valve cover while it was friggin hot and checked the valve clearance. I think it ended up being a "snug" .007 and .011 but it was NEVER a problem. My wife and I had two of our trucks go over 450K miles. The first time I set to spec as per the Factory manual, they ticked louder than I ever heard them. I only did that once.
I was a mechanic for 23 years and the last 15 of those years was at a Caterpillar dealership. I don't know everything but I know these settings will work for you. I had a couple high mile engines need the adjusting screws replaced. The ends get hammered and it makes it difficult to get an accurate setting with your feeler gauges. The pads on the rocker arms can get a wear spot too but it's usually the screws that can mess you up. Also I leave the feeler gauge in place when I tighten the nut so it doesn't move. Your "feel" for feeler gauge drag matters too. The Go/No Go style feeler gauges may help you.

I’ll try doing it cold, but if I set it to .007 .011 cold will it end up being around .008 .012 hot cause it expands with heat? Last adjustment I did I used go don’t go, I made it a tight .007 .011 and just made sure a 8/12 wouldn’t fit, I think the screws are good I’ll have to look at them again

@93runnerLuke You will be fine setting it as described cold. You should and will still hear the tapping of the valvetrain. That's normal. If you don't hear it at all it's probably too tight and definitely not good.
The reason they need to be checked once in a while is that you may hear the tapping on SOME of them but you can have one or more that are tight.
Try it cold at .007 and .011 and see how it sounds. If you're worried, set them to .008 and .012 COLD. There's a TON of these threads you can dig up and go through.
