Need Carb Help

1986 Toyota Corolla. 4A-C.

Used to run. Won't run on it's own. Will idle roughly as gas is poured into carb. Exhaust during this process is deep blue and highly toxic.

Verdict?

is it actually getting fuel pressure to the carb? If not, start there.

86 is a little before my time. sounds like you got some needles varnished up and the carb could use a rebuild. that being said, is this one of our handy-dandy, force feedback, electronic carbs? if so, a lot of techs used to swap them out for regular carbs

It's the stock carb that came on the 4A-C engine.

Carbs are not my thing, and I won't understand much about them until I get to rebuild one on my own.

The problem with me taking the one I have out and trying to rebuild it is that I can't do things like that because in case I mess up, I'm screwed.

yeah, like I said, I can't remember if those were before or during the days of our force feedback carbs. They weren't very good. Quick way to tell (and my shop no longer has manuals for an 86 btw nor does toyota list them online for me to check ) is to check the carb. if there are wires/electrical connections hanging off of it, it's a force feedback.

so, two options: 1) get a carb from a junkyard, rebuild that and try it, that way you've still got the other one and 2) buy bulk carb cleaner. Drain the gas tank. spray the ever-lovin' daylight out of the carb until there's no hint of varnish left. Then run a couple of tanks of straight carb cleaner through. It sounds very redneckish but I've seen it work a couple of times so it might be worth a shot.

What about filling the bowl?

And do your force feedbacks have a sight glass? Or any other way of easily telling it apart?

I haven't specifically looked for wires, but I am pretty sure there are none.
