every one keeps knocking the 3.0, my rig has 255k+ miles, the heads were redone at 70k, and I havent had any problems with the motor yet(other than the dreaded knock sensor circuit), and my truck has been to hell and back several times, and then driven 3-400 miles the next day. Imo.. the 3.0 is every bit as good a motor as the 22re,22r..etc.. Yes its true, when it comes time to work on it for the first time... its a p.i.t.a, but the second time is easier, and no its not a power house, and was never designed to be, it was designed to run, and if you change the oil regularly, and DONT floor it regularly, it will prob run fine, maybe you will get the head gasket prob, maybe not, but the other toyota motors are also prone to issues, and its still a toyota they are much more reliable than any motor I have ever owned!!

ive never owned a 3.0
so i couldnt tell you the good and the bad
but i have owned a couple 22re's and i love em
I believe if you regear, take the engine and port the heads and bore it out a bit, put a new cam in it and some fuel mods with exhaust mods
youll wake it up quite a bit.
just my couple of pennys and some lint

Well ask yourself these questions. When swapping a 3.0, you must also swap the 3.0 tranny right? Wiring, and everything gets complicated.
You should just keep your engine. Maybe get 30'' tires. I have 31''s and I mean they fit nicely, but the gas and power strugge. My tires I can top out about 85-90...
Tires don't mean squat, when compared to other offroad gear like lockers, and solid axles...

Back in my MOPAR days, I had a 98 Dakota with a 318 (Don't pound on me, I wised up and bought a Toyota), with that engine I was considering adding the K&N kit to it, but after looking at it closely all I saw was a piece of molded ABS pipe and a couple of brackets. After a trip to the local big box hardware store's (they both sponsor a NASCAR team) I was able to fab one up using plumbing pipe and parts, some random aluminium parts, and a cone style filter sourced from the Internet. I believe that it performed as good or better than the K&N kit, and it sounded like it was going to suck in small animals when I opened the throttle.
I considered building one as soon as I bought the Toyota, but after looking at the AFM decided not to as the whole point is to get rid of obstructions to air flow, and stock, the AFM seems to be the most obstructive part.
Others on this forum have relocated the assembly by swapping it and the battery creating an overall shorter path of airflow, and others still have swapped in a Supra AFM for increased airflow with better filters and larger pipe, but as I have not done either I will let theme comment on the results.

i'd gear it, keep the 22re, add a k&n filter and exhaust system, and cam. you'll be more than happy with the outcome of that. plenty of highway speed and more power to boot. that would be much easier on your wallet than the v6 swap. thats a pretty major operation from what i understand. thats just my 2 cents worth, but don't ask for any change back. ha ha

I vote regear it in 4.88's or 5.29 if you go to 35" tires or bigger.40 mm Weber carb and a header do wounders same with a cam.
