Question Looking for opinions

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum (just signed up 2 minutes ago). I'm a proud owner of a Tacoma i bought 2 months ago and I love it.

I've been searching through threads, and I did find a lot of information to help me out on my question. But the reason why I'm posting is just to get some opinions on my specific situation.

I'm looking to get some bigger tires for my yota, but I'm looking to stay away from regearing. I've read a lot of the problems this can cause, but I'd like to see what you guys think. My truck is an 03, 2.7L I4, 4x4 with 3.91 gears, and a 5 speed manual transmission. So these are stock gears, with the stock size 235/75/R15 tires. I think most of you would agree that a 235 looks kinda small for a Taco. So I know that I could fit a 31 inch tire, but I'd probably give it a small 2 or 3 inch lift anyway. So is there a lot of power loss in a 3.91/31" combo? I won't be doing much off-roading at all (definately no rock crawling or anything), but I still don't want to lose too much power. This is a day to day vehicle. Gas mileage is not much of an issue for me. I'd be keeping a 15 inch rim.

If the 31 would be too much of a power lose, I was thinking of just going up one size to a 30" tire. But the 30" probably would not look great with a lift. So how does the 30" tire look on a tacoma? (no lift) Would it still look a little small? Or am I wrong, would it look fine with a lift?

I guess it's sort of a vote haha.

(31" tire, 3.91 gear, 2-3 inch lift) or (30" tire, 3.91 gear, no lift/lift)

If it makes a big difference, I plan to get a K&N cold air intake.

send me your thoughts

Thanks in advance.

- Luc

You should be able to fit 32" tires with minimal rubbing, with no lift.
I run 265/75/16's on my 04 Double Cab Taco.
No lift. I wouldn't hassle with the intake personally, but thats just me, im not a fan of K&N...

In my experience, a hi flow filter like the K&N makes almost zero difference.

You should be fine with a 31 or 32. You will have some power loss, but depending on where you live, you might not even notice. Its steep hills that usually make it a pain with no regear.

Thanks for your input guys, I really appreciate it. I guess my main reason for questioning is because some people say 5th gear becomes useless with a 3.91/33".

More replies would be greatly appreciated
