Locker question, among some other things
Okay, I have searched, but can't really find a definite answer. And that might be because of my deficiency in understanding what everything is and does (especially suspension related stuff), so hopefully you guys can help me out understanding some things.
What exactly is a locker? From what I know, or think I know, it locks the wheels so they spin at the same time?
And now that sounds kind of dumb.
And would I benefit from one of these? I have a 2wd pickup, and I don't really plan on going over rocks, through water, through mud, or anything super tough. I just wanna haul ass through the desert. So, would I really benefit from a locker? Can they even be used on a 2wd setup?
Another thing I was worried about is that I purchased my truck with a 3" body and 3" suspension lift. I'm not sure how they went about doing this lift (torsion bars, or spacers, or something else) But, if it's not spacers, is it causing wear on other components of my suspension? Or even anything else? Unfortunately, I won't have my truck 'till next week, so I won't be able to look at it or take pictures until then.

On an open axle..Say one tire was up in the air and the other was still on the ground, The tire in the air would be the only one spinning...The axle sends power through the path of least resistence...
If your gonna bomb it through the desert, A locker will be a deff must..
Many of the trucks you see in the desert are only 2wd, with lockers in the rear.
An Aussie locker will probably be a good choice for you..

But, I noticed your in riverside...Im down in temecula, If you ever wanna tear it up in the desert let me know..

Oh, alright, thanks that clears it up. So this effects turning, then, right? Until enough torque is put on the locker to 'break' it, right?
Am I going to notice a big difference when turning and going around corners and stuff?

a locker would be a great help in my opinion for a 2WD desert truck, might help you get through some silt. driving a locker equipped truck you will notice some different turning characteristic. if you went with a spool (cheap, effective) you would definitly start to eat tires. Both tires would turn at the same RPM...
aussie locker is an easy install (check out Zuk's site: http://gearinstalls.com/ he has several great write ups) and is delivered to your door for about $260 or so...http://aussielocker.com/
edit: if you don't need the body lift, might want to take it out...

A spool is when you weld the side gears, right? I hear they do this a lot in demolition derbys. I doubt I'll do that, I'll still want to be able to turn.

To be honest, I'm not sure if I need it. I'm running 31's, but eventually want to get 33's.

Hah, The difference.. You havent noticed the 356 dollar difference ?

The arb air locker or detroit E locker are good choices if you have the money, They are selectable, so you get on the dirt turn it on, have a tiny bit diff turning characteristics, get off dirt and turn it off, like nothing ever happend.
An Aussie is an auto locker, your locked always until it feels you going around a corner and unlocks itself..
One of the best choices for an auto locker...
theres at least 5 diff reviews about the aussie..

So basically, it's just with the press of a button. I get it.
So, now I'm just researching differences in auto lockers. 90% of the time, it'll be in the city, not in the dirt, and it's my DD, so I want something that'll work best.
