Lift for 3rd gen 4runenr
I'm looking for about a 2" lift for my '99 4runner. I want something to improve my offroad ability, asthetics, and also keep it from completely draining my gas milege etc, because it is my main vehicle. I have heard people talk of 2" spacers for the coils etc. (around $200) But I wanted to know what the best option was and for an affordable price.
What can anyone tell me about this problem?

You often get what you pay for. The coil spring spacers work but your ride will suffer some. Yes, you can get Daystar spacers, or cornfed spacers. Best option IMO for the buck would be the econo front lift from Sonoran Steel.com. Adjustable front Bilstein 5125 shock with a matched TRD progressive rate Tundra coil. At the lowest setting I think you get about 1.5" of lift. He also has options for the rear.
But, you are still looking at $800+ for these components to do it right.
Daystar spacers all around will probably be in the $200 range.

Dude, I threw away my hard earned $300 for the spacer lift. It looked good for 3-4 weeks, then the sagging started on my already worn springs.
I just recently dropped almost $1100 on coils and shocks for my truck, but I am getting what I want - a 2.5"/3" lift kit. And the good stuff lasts longer.
BUy cheap - buy twice...

small or tall 99s now?
You could get most of what you need with tall 99 springs if your 99 (like mine) came with the short springs. Just upgrade to the talls.
Check your color codings on your springs-you may be able to stay "stock" and yet gain some lift.
If you have never had shocks replaced you are likely overdue and many people do it at the same time-particularly makes sense for the front units-held together with the top plate. You got rear butt sag? Most of the 3rd gen Runners do...
read up on Sonoran Steel website-many of us have done one or more variations of lifts now and you can learn from our mistakes.
This gentleman Steve S. over there has combined the best properties of a few lifts and makes them available to work in combination with one another.

I appreciate the advice, I have yet to replace the springs, and it has about 175,000 miles on it, I've had that riding in the bow of a boat feeling for a while when your on gravel roads. so I will definately look into that, that and my larger tires may be all I require for what I do. I really appreciate the advice. also how much extra clearance does taking off the running boards gain?
