leaking oil on 22re

i was gonna look at a truck that needed a rear diff but came across 2 for $400 up the road i'm going to look at today or tomorrow instead. i talked to buddy last night and he said he took the good one of the road because he blew the rear oil seal in the motor. he said he wouldnt recomend me driving it home because the oil is leaking out on the exuast pretty bad and smoking from it he figured it might light on fire. does this sound like a rear main seal leaking? any other spots that it could be coming from i can look at when i go up to see it?

Take a look at the rear where the driveshaft meets the flange off the diff, if its sprayed everywhere under the truck in that area thenn thats it.

Sounds like a pinion seal if it is hitting the muffler!

Just my 2cents!

yeah i'm hoping its something else if its leaking on the muffler .dont really want to lay in the snow to drop the tranny to change the rear main, but also dont want to pay a fortune to get someone to do it for me.

Talking

Ive never done a pinion seal but from what I have read it dont look to hard, you just need the right tools.

Toyota's hurt the wallet! But the 15 minutes of wheeling and the hours of trying to figure out how to get unstuck sure are fun!Lol

Oh and explaining to the girlfriend/wife that you meant to do it!LOL

went and looked at them today the oil is all over the back of the engine, tranny and driveshaft kinda looks like it is coming from the top of the motor and running down. hoping it might just be the valve cover gasket of half circle gasket at the back i'll have a better look when i get them home. the motor was reconditioned so i couldnt pass them up fro $300
