KN air filter and stalling

Hi all. I have a 1989 22re 4x4 manual with 164k on it. I replaced the stock air filter with a K&N filter. I dont know if its just coincidence but it starts and runs fine but when i come to a stop all the dash lights come and it dies unless you keep your foot on the gas. It restarts no problem an no lights come on but i get to another stop light push in the clutch and brake and it dies. Any help would be great.

the kn is an oiled air filter, pull your MAF sensor and see if its not coated with oil,
this could be your problem

Its a VAFM. Not a MAF. For cleaning, I would use a rag (clean) and maybe a clean bottle brush. Don't get it wet inside. The AFM on our truck uses a flap, that is moved by the suction of the intake, to change resistances read by the ECU. Nothing like a MAF. And oiling your AFM is likely to be a recurring issue with the k&n. Except that you already spent good money on it, I'd recommend switching back to a standard element air filter..

There's tons of threads on opening them up on here, but I wouldn't do that, myself. If you remove the lid from the airbox, and the intake tube from the top of it, you should be able to see the passage that air travels through. That's all you should need to clean. The little door/flap gets oily/sticky and hangs up. Clean it up, gently, too much force and you'll bugger it up, and it should work again. Use Google to search, it returns better info than just searching here.

Sorry for the ignorance, your talking about the airbox with the filter in it not the one with the siliconed lid.

Heh? Undo the four clips that hold your airbox lid on, like you're changing your air filter. Then loosen the clamp that holds the intake tube onto the airbox. Don't run off with the lid now, its still hooked up with wires. Hang on. I'll do pics.

The other excellent thing you can do for both you and your truck, is pick up a Haynes or Chiltons manual to get going.

No worries. here we go....
Remove clips like this around perimeter of lid

then remove clamp on intake hose and remove PAIR system hose

and you should see this

then turn lid over (carefully)

^that is the VAFM door/vane, that is probably the source of the problem.
Here's the intake tube side of things..

You may try some MAF cleaner to help break up the gunk if there is some, but I'm not sure about that...having never had your issue, and never having any need or desire to play with that..And, unless you want to play with an otherwise reliable system, DO NOT remove the "D" shaped cover on top of it all. If smog rules and inspections apply to you, you could also fail for messing with that..

Re-assembly is the reverse of dis-assembly.

It didn't work. It was pretty clean but I sprayed an gently cleaned around the door with a qtip. I started it up and after it got warm the panel on the passenger side was clicking it would idle down and die.
Here is a video. I turned up the idle just to keep half ass running. Ignore the loud rattle that was the wiper fluid hose.

That's exactly how mine runs with a massive vacuum leak. And that's just the washer bottle rattling? Sheesh. Thought there was more than an idle problem...
Are all the vacuum lines connected and in good shape? Try the unlit torch or carb cleaner along the lines? Timing right? Throttle body and TPS set right?

Sprayed the carb cleaner. No surges. I notice more than usual moisture from the tail pipe. After it warmed up it died.

Should help with somewhere to start. The first one is AFM related, so I'd start there.
