And how the hell would you install one?!

Im 16, and just got the car last month, so i'm not sure if i'm going to be able to start replacing axles yet. I've already decided i'm going to make it 4wd as soon as i get out of tech school next year.
Assuie is another very good reliable brand. I forgot the started making the V6 locker not to long ago. Lockrites are also very reliable. The only failures I have heard of from a lockrite was because it was installed wrong which is true for any locker. I had one in a first gen. A buddy of mine has had one for 6 years and put it through hell. At one point he ran 37 pitbulls for a couple years and it still hasnt failed. As for the clicking, since your 16 your stereo wont be quiet enough for you to even notice it. It will click but you really have to listen for it.

But as I said before, research research research. Since the SAS is becoming very popular with the tacos you might be able to get a really good deal on if not a free IFS set up for the 3rd. Some people take the time to remove the IFS and other just chop it off. It varies

Great videos thanks!
So now if i get an Auto locker installed, in my 2wd, when im going strait through, both my back wheels will turn at the same speed. And when im turning, it goes back to having one wheel spin faster?

Or is a LSD a better way to go for that? I mostly drive on road, but when it rains i like to take it to the local OHV park in the Ocala National.

before you get to spending a lot of money get out, learn how to drive off road, and get the feel for your rig. All this talk of lockers this and tires that will do nothing unless you can drive, pick a line, and execute the basics of driving offroad. I could take you out of the good ole state of fl. and stick you in a built rig in the colorado mountains but with out a general idea of how to drive and what the vehicle is going to do in certain situations a built rig is useless. YOU are one of the most important factors in how capable your rig really is. Get in, get out and find out what it and YOU can do. Then go from there. You might be surprised.

So true. I've been getting tips and stuff but most of it comes with experience. Something i lack.

Eventually, your 2wd will let you down. If you wanna do even moderate wheeling...save your money and get 4x4. I wouldn't even dream of putting a lunchbox locker in a 2wd.

Now, if you wanna turn it into a pre-runner...that's a whole different story!

I was gonna say because it's 2wd I'd save to get a 4x4, but a locker will make a huge difference if you stick with the 2wd a winch up front will be a must there are tons of brands of lockers out there as well as winches then Obviously lift bigger tires etc

Dude I am. but this is part of it. I want to ask questions and get answers from people who know what they're talking about and have experience, not just some article online.

Automatic lockers are great, reliable, and cheap traction. Dont ever plan to drive in the snow though. 2wd and an auto locker in the snow you will be fishtailing everywhere. Another thing some one else may be able to answer, is the rear axle on 2wd 3rd gen runner the same size as the 4wd? Like in the 80's pickups the 4x4 had an 8 inch and the 4x2 had a 7.5 inch? also are the gear ratios the same?

I'll tell you what bud, if you can learn how to wheel with a 2 wheel drive and get some good experience, then you will be unstoppable when you convert it to 4 wheel drive. Like the other poster said, YOU are the most important factor while wheeling. I have seen older guys do impossible stuff in 2wheel drive that I couldn't do in 4wheel drive. good luck

Edit: now that I see you're FL, i dont think snow will be a problem for you
