Help with Rear locker

I just bought my truck today and when trying everything out I noticed that when I lock the rear locker in the light just blinks and blinks. Is this normal? The manual says when it locks in it turns solid. The ABS light turns on so I don't know. So I am coming to the experts. Any help would be appreciated very much.
Thanks,
Jason

Sounds to me like it's not engaging, maybe a bad solenoid or switch.

I was 4 low but not before trying lock it in. Where is the solenoid? On the axle?

???? So you pressed the button, then went into 4LO? Try putting it in 4LO (transmission in N first, just in case you don't know), then engaging the rear locker. If it hasn't been engaged in a while, you might need to drive forward/backward slowly and turn the wheel at the same time. Or, others have suggested taking a mallet and giving a slight whack on the actuator, located right on the housing.

Yeah, i believe it has a 4lo safety and a speed safety of like 5mph or something.

you need to be in 4lo

then while going 5mph or less, hit the button. it may take a while to engage.
roll forward, go reverse, turn a little, it will eventually clunk in

if you are stuck and spinning wheels, go forward and reverse but -really easy- and spin
a bit EASY, then go the other direction EASY...it will engage

if it hasn't been used it will be stiff. once you use it enough (if you go wheeling) it loosens up and engages reliably.

Sorry about my last post I was sleepy. I meant to say that I was not in 4 low when I hit the locker button. I pushed the button then shifted into 4 low. Since then I have tried to engage it again. I put it in 4 low then pushed the button both times that I tried I rolled forward and backwards. I didn't turn the wheels but I will that also. I am going to try to tap the motor too. I used to have a Ranger that had electronic 4 wheel drive. When I first got it I had to tap the motor to get it to work. I guessed that it had not been engaged for a while. I never had anymore trouble with it as long as I shifted it in every so often. I am hoping that it is something like that. Thanks for all the quick responses. They are all very helpful. I will update what happens.
