Cool thank you sir. Idk why he was trying to plug a scanner to it then. I went to an autozone and they told me I need a scanner and to go to a mechanic so that's what I did. Basturds got me all confused. I will try this tomorrow. Thanks again for the help mr.ksti

The white crap is an anti-corrosion(basically dielectric grease) material to prevent corrosion of the terminals and wiring. You don't need to clean it out.

Ha ok that's good to know. Shoulda found yota tech before going to the mechanic. He said the white stuff was the reasoning wasn't scanning. Is there a scanner for the obd1 or was he trying to plug an obd2 scanner to it? It seemed to fit right over the plug, but wasn't registering

So when you plug in a paper clip the flashes are too hard too keep track of. Too many codes. So I got a code reader. Yea a code reader it told exactly what to replace, no flash counting just read the words. I have to say that the code reader is much better than the damn paper clip and it is free to use at local mechanics shop. Why would you rather bother with counting flashes that could be over 80. That seems like it would be pretty easy to mid count one of the codes. Mines got at least 20 stored codes.

I dunno, being as I have paper clips and short bits of wire all over my shop area, I use them. Never had issues with seeing patterns or counting....
But it's good you're getting somewhere on it. What'd ya get for codes? These kind of things help other people when they search because they have the same problem.

Rpm signal, speed sensor, but he said my problem is probably a coder motor which I know nothing about. I'm gonna test the connections to it and see if its getting power but after that I don't know what to do. There was a lot of other codes. Mostly electric I can't remember what other ones though. I think I'll do a tranny service. New fluids and filter and see if it helps. If not go to the encoder motor which I guess sits on the side of the tranny and reads the teeth and tells it when to shift. Check power source and possibly replace the encoder motor. Does anyone know anything about this and could help me gain an understanding of this encoder motor my mechanic speaks of?

Type out the codes here, there's enough knowledgeable folks to explain what they are. Also, never heard of an encoder "motor" in a Toyota auto of that gen, but different folks use different terms. Sounds like (shot in the dark) need a TPS adjust, kickdown/throttle cable adjust, maybe a VSS issue, and an aside, what's the tranny fluid look/smell like? The codes help you help us help you. Unless guesswork is good enough.

Tranny fluid looks good to me but I'll be doing a full tranny service including fluid Chang just too see. It doesn't just do it in o/d anymore so I can't just turn it off and drive so it has become important. It shifts up and down all over the place while in drive. But my speedometer doesn't work and I'm getting a vss code so I need to do that anyway if that could help my shifting problem ill fork out the money for it. But it's expensive and if its not related to the tranny issues, the speedometer can not work for a while longer.

ETS can cause OD issues. When your engine is cold-140*F, the ECU runs in open loop, holding you out of OD until engine temp is +140*F. So a bad temp sensor can cause some issues. If your speedo is inop, and you're getting a code for VSS, that's definitely not helping your shifting issues. Be careful going full flush on the tranny, some folks have experienced even more issues following that. YMMV.

Well, google around, I'm not too familiar with A340H, but I believe there may be 2. Also, a VSS related code doesn't necessarily mean that the VSS is the culprit. Could be wiring shorted or disconnected, plug inop or disconnected, bad ground, etc. Look at the link right below my post, in my signature, find an FSM that applies, download, and go nuts. Accurately diagnosing or resolving an issue via interwebs is not really my forte, so I'll push you in the direction ya need.

I cleaned the screen that Toyota puts on the tranny instead of a filter and the tranny seams to work fine now. But I now have a break problem. When you stop the front breaks seem to stick for a while. When you let the break go it doesn't idle forward. But if I just sit and idle for a while it will start moving and then I can go. If a try to give it throttle while the breaks are stuck the rear tires slip on the ice. Front ones are locked up. I was wondering if the cold weather here in Idaho could cause this? It has been negative 10 or so everyday.
