Hello Everyone
#1
Hello everyone, first of all I'm brand new to this forum and I'll like to introduce myself. My name is Luis, I live in the Bay Area (Northern California). I'm not a mechanic but I consider myself "careful and patient" (when it comes to handling tools and some other things). I like to do lots of online reading and thanks to this site (Yotatech) and you guys out there, I've managed to save myself some serious cash. My truck is a 1994 3VZE SR5 with 125K miles. BTW this is the second V6 that I've owned (I previously had a 1993). Anyways, I bought it this past December from its original owner, he kept all kinds of dealership service records (including all the recalls). Overall it runs great, and everything seems to work as it should, EXCEPT one thing.. It does have a constant high idle condition, somewhere around 1100 RPM's. In the morning the truck starts fine, and it runs fine but lets say I drive it to another city (a reasonable distance), and I turn the engine off, then I turn it back on, it will crank but it will not start and sometimes will start but then immediately dies after a second or two, OR.. if I press on the gas pedal several times it will start and run very rough with a very low idle (somewhere in between 300-500 RPM's), and then I'll have to keep pressing on the gas pedal to keep the engine running otherwise I would stall, but then after a while of driving everything returns back to normal, the engine will stabilize back to 1100 RPM's, this problem does not happen everyday which is really weird, it only happens two or maybe three times a week. Some of the things the I've replaced are: the coolant temperature sensor which was very old and rusty, the throttle position sensor helped me solving the problem of the idle surging up and down, now its pretty stable (but high), and I'm thinking about testing/replacing the expensive AFM, but first I wanted to see if any of you experts had another suggestion...

Welcome to Yotatech and glad to see you have been able to fix several issues. I do not know the 3.0 but several others do. On the AFM, I get mine from the boneyard. With a multimeter and some quick checks, you can find you a good one in the yards and save several dollars. Haynes manual will show the test to do on them.

Hey Thanks a lot Terry! I guess, I'll do that this weekend. BTW I've already done tons of research on how to test the AFM, so it shouldn't be too bad, hopefully that should take care of the issue.

Welcome to YotaTech, Luis. I am having the same issue you are and have yet to find a solution, so if you do, please let me know. I have a 1994 Toyota Pickup DLX, 22RE, 2WD. When I drive my truck after it warmed up, get to my location, and turn it off, I have to wait about 30 minutes before turning it back on. It's not that it wont start, but If I turn it on while it's still warm it will have an ugly idle and sometimes die on me. I have to rev the engine a few times for it to get to the proper idle. I've noticed that it's only after it cools down and I turn it on that it doesn't have the rough idle (it does have a high rpm, but I think that normal). Now, I am not a mechanic. Like you, I read the Haynes manual, online forums with similar issues, and even youtube, but if I had to guess, I would say it's the fuel injectors. I am waiting for an opportunity to switch them out. I'll let you know how it goes. Once again, welcome!

Hello Muril, glad to meet friendly people on this site. It seems like we are having very similar issues. If the AFM doesn't solve it, I'm going to have to take a look at the fuel system and probably VAC lines. I'll keep you posted.
