Got stuck in mud..NEED HELP

Im a newbie when it comes to offroading. Stupid me, thought it was easy and got myself stuck in mud for about 8 hrs. lol. Anyways, after going to wal mart countless times to buy rope and a winch, my buddies and I finally got my 98 4runner out. My runner is 4X4, but i was wondering when is it a good time to turn on the Rear diff lock? also, how fast should i be going while diff lock is engaged with my 4x4?

unless you ground out the grey wire (search..), it will only work when its in 4lo... (that can be fixed tho) i would turn it on as soon as you start wheelin and need the traction.

You can engage the diff lock while stopped, it just takes a little bit of wheel spin to lock it unless the splines are perfectly lined up right away. I don't know if it's bad for it, but I don't like engaging mine while driving, I usually stop and lock it then wait for the 'click' of it locking then continue.

welcome to the boards - a little searching on technique will save you alot in the long run (trust me, i'm where you are, pretty new to wheelin myself, almost stuck in sand on my first trip lol)...

be sure when getting straps to get the non-hooked kind and buy some D ring shackles, not clevis hooks. Shackles = safety from what you'll see said on the boards...
