Going keyless, disable ignition lock
#1
I want to make my 5spd 98 4runner work without a key, ie no key needed to enter, turn on and start vehicle. My plan is to install a keyless entry/alarm system, a switch to turn vehicle on, and a push button to start engine. The only obstacle in the way is the ignition lock that requires a key to free up the steering wheel. Does anyone have insight into how to disable the ignition lock? Is this a bad idea? Any feedback would be helpful.

I think it's a bad idea to get rid of the key to get into the vehicle. Always good to have a mechanical backup for something like that. What happens if your battery goes dead. how are ya gonna get into the vehicle?

There will still be door locks and a keyed ignition, I just want key use to be optional. My thought is to emulate the Toyota Prius - it's keyless to operate with a push button to start. However to start the vehicle you need the remote key fob on hand because it makes use of a proximity sensor to enable the ignition system/ turn on the car. I'm not sure I can do the proximity sensor thing. Obviously I am aware making the car keyless to turn on that it would be much easier to steal. I will hide the start button and an alarm system should deter theft.
