Goin to look at '98 Runner...thoughts?
Hey guys, new to Yotatech...I'm goin to look tomorrow at a '98 runner:

Thoughts? It has basically what I'm looking for, including the locker. Is there anything specifically I ought to look at when I check it out?
Thanks.

There's way too much to list, but ask for maintinence records. Then, pay special attention to the transmission's shifts if you take it for a test drive, inspect the coolant, oil, and transmission fluid. Also look for any leaking gear oil from the rear axle seals. Also, ask for an inspection from a Toyota dealer and see if they go for it while you're at it.
I'm sure other people will think of more stuff.

check the air filter...usually a good indication of how one cares for their car. Look through the drivers side wheel well, and check the oil filter....does it look pretty old? when you drive it, the basics...turn the A/C on and see if the temp guage moves at all...does it drive ok with it on...just listen to the engine while drivine-radio off at all times!

What I always look at first when buying a used vehicle is oil.
If it is clear and smells like fresh or almost fresh - the engine is most likely
in good shape (unless the seller just changed it). If the oil is really dark and
not transparent on the dipstick and smells like burnt oil or if you see metallic
dust in it - the engine is toast. But generally a 4runner with this kind of mileage should have plenty of life left in it.
One other thing - when you get into the truck, dont start it right away!
First, turn the key to the on position and see if all the warning lights are on.
And then start the engine and see if they go off. It is important because
the seller may have disconnected an "check engine" light or any other ones, to sell the truck,
or it could have just burnt out. If you do it this way - you will know that
the lights do work, but are off because nothing is wrong with the vehicle.
Also, some 3rd generation runners had head
gasket leak problems, but not inside the engine as the 2nd generation did,
but on the outside. So, check for any leaks on engine sides.
That is about all I can think of at the moment. Run the VIN# through carfax,
and if you do decide to buy it, you can ask toyota to check their service
records for the VIN.
Good luck!
