well even if you dont gane much, go ahead and try to find a used set of 4.56 gears. and wen you go to move up to a bigger tire just save a little extra cash for some gears.

My $.02 - gear up to the tire you're going to run in the future. I wouldn't want to have to re-gear all over again. That would be more expensive in the long run, and 4.56s w/ 33s wouldn't be much different than 3.90s and 31s. If you're regearing because you're sick of not having enough power, you're defeating your purpose with 33s and 4.56s.

Here are your options IMO:
1) Regear w/ used 4.56s and stay w/ 31s forever... or
2) Get 4.88s and 33s.

you could probably find a 4.88 third in a junkyard. i'm not sure what youre saying about needing a housing/full axle

i had a 94 v6 auto...

4.88s and 31s was doggish. i slapped in 5.71s for fun and it didn't do a lick of good. wanna know what did? trading it for something else :X

my $0.01

I believe the stock 4.88 diffs can't be regeared like 93yotamonster said, but it really doesn't matter because you aren't going to find a stock 4.88 diff anyways because they are rare.

What I'm suggesting is you can buy some 4.88 ring and pinions and regear your existing diffs. Or, buy the 3rds w/ 4.88s (or whatever ratio you want) already installed from a place like eastcoastgearsupply.com. This shop is high quality and their prices are low because you send them your old 3rds back after you get your new ones. Plus you can get lockers also pre-installed in the 3rds for great prices (highly recommend).

Your other choice of course is to swap in used 4.56 3rds. But those aren't exactly plentiful either. And like I said before, if you go to 33s you're going straight back to where you were - bogging down.

I don't want to threadjack or anything but while we're on the topic, I'd like something clarified. Can 4:10 diffs be regeared with 4:88 ring and pinion sets, or are there compatibility issues?

yes they can be regeard to 4.88's. the only diffs that cannot be regeard are the factory 4.88's. and i think some of the older 2wd like early 70's cant cause the older housings want exept that size gear. please correct me if im wrong

That's good. When I register my rig, I'll be running 265s (32"?) with the factory 4:10 diffs and an auto. 4:88s are high on my list of upgrades.

if i was you i would go ahead and gear to 5.29, because some auto trucks came factory with 4.88's if it came with 31/1050/15's. your just going to wast your money if you run 32's and 4.88's with an auto

It didn't come with 31s, it came with the stupid steel wheels and 29s. Any chance it came with 4:56s maybe? Also, I don't plan on going bigger than 32", more likely back down to 31". Does the auto really need 5:29s for those?
