gas leak?

I'm pretty sure I have a gas leak in my 89 3.0. It wreaks of gas when I drive it, but I'm still getting about 15mpgs and I'm having a hard time finding any sort of physical leak. Any ideas?

If its only leaking while running check the lines and fuel sending unit. Check your injectors to see if they are leaking as well. I assume you have already taken a good look over the tank? Filler tube and lines could be toast as well.

I have the same issue in my 94 i suspect its my sending unit cause it comes from the rear and up through a hole in the hatch. But i could never find a hole in anything took injectors out put new orings ect so its coming from my tank. Fill the tank full and check for leaks that way

Sometimes it's just the rubber gas lines are hardened or a clamp on them has come loose.

So some new things I have noticed, it smells worse inside the cab then outside the truck and is more noticeable when stopped or in traffic. I doubt its the tank because I just pulled that last month to replace the fuel pump and didn't notice anything irregular. I also did the valve cover gaskets on Sunday and I peeked at the fuel rails while I was in there... they looked normal however I don't know much about them or what I would be looking for problem wise.

Unless there was a pool of gas in the valley you wouldn't have noticed anything when looking at the fuel rails. If its worse at idle it might be the fuel sending unit. Did you replace the gasket at the tank when you replaced the fuel pump?

It was still the factory pump and I did not notice any gaskets, nor did my haynes mention one. I may be mistaken but isn't the fuel sending unit for the gauge? My gauge sill works brilliantly. As far as the rails/injectors is it possible they are seeping without leaving a pool?

Ya, I wasn't thinking. The pool would evapourate before you got a chance to look at it.

There is a gasket between the tank and the top bit of the fuel pump. If you didn't notice one, and didn't put a new one in that is more then likely your problem.

That might be able to help you out a little.

I would tighten down all the fittings first. Then replace orings and seals. You can pressureize the system by turning the key to the on position. The fuel pump will start running. It will allow you to more easily find any leak that is happening.
